10. Tiger Queen

42281646._SY475_.jpg

By Annie Sulivan

My Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Synopsis: From Annie Sullivan, author of A Touch of Gold, comes Tiger Queen, a sweeping YA fantasy adventure that tells the story of a fierce desert princess battling to save her kingdom. Fans of Rebel of the Sands and Meagan Spooner will devour this retelling of Frank Stockton’s famous short story, “The Lady, or the Tiger?”

In the mythical desert kingdom of Achra, an ancient law forces sixteen-year-old Princess Kateri to fight in the arena to prove her right to rule. For Kateri, winning also means fulfilling a promise to her late mother that she would protect her people, who are struggling through windstorms and drought. The situation is worsened by the gang of Desert Boys that frequently raids the city wells, forcing the king to ration what little water is left. The punishment for stealing water is a choice between two doors: behind one lies freedom, and behind the other is a tiger.

But when Kateri’s final opponent is announced, she knows she cannot win. In desperation, she turns to the desert and the one person she never thought she’d side with. What Kateri discovers twists her world—and her heart—upside down. Her future is now behind two doors—only she’s not sure which holds the key to keeping her kingdom and which releases the tiger.

On one of his visits to London, Peter makes the acquaintance of young Wendy Darling, whom he invites to travel with him to Neverland and become the mother of his gang of Lost Boys. 8. Spin the Dawn

(The Blood of Stars #1)

42815556

By Elizabeth Lim

My Rating🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Synopsis: Maia Tamarin dreams of becoming the greatest tailor in the land, but as a girl, the best she can hope for is to marry well. When a royal messenger summons her ailing father, once a tailor of renown, to court, Maia poses as a boy and takes his place. She knows her life is forfeit if her secret is discovered, but she’ll take that risk to achieve her dream and save her family from ruin. There’s just one catch: Maia is one of twelve tailors vying for the job.

Backstabbing and lies run rampant as the tailors compete in challenges to prove their artistry and skill. Maia’s task is further complicated when she draws the attention of the court magician, Edan, whose piercing eyes seem to see straight through her disguise.

And nothing could have prepared her for the final challenge: to sew three magic gowns for the emperor’s reluctant bride-to-be, from the laughter of the sun, the tears of the moon, and the blood of stars. With this impossible task before her, she embarks on a journey to the far reaches of the kingdom, seeking the sun, the moon, and the stars, and finding more than she ever could have imagined.

Steeped in Chinese culture, sizzling with forbidden romance, and shimmering with magic, this young adult fantasy is pitch-perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas or Renée Ahdieh.

7. The House of Hades

(The Heroes of Olympus #4)

12127810._SY475_

By Rick Riordan

My Rating🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Synopsis: Hazel stands at a crossroads. She and the remaining crew of the Argo II could return home with the Athena Parthenos statue and try to stop Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter from going to war. Or they could continue their quest to find the House of Hades, where they might be able to open the Doors of Death, rescue their friends Percy and Annabeth from Tartarus, and prevent monsters from being reincarnated in the mortal world. Whichever road they decide to take, they have to hurry, because time is running out. Gaea, the bloodthirsty Earth Mother, has set the date of August 1 for her rise to power.

Annabeth and Percy are overwhelmed. How will the two of them make it through Tartarus? Starving, thirsty, and in pain, they are barely able to stumble on in the dark and poisonous landscape that holds new horrors at every turn. They have no way of locating the Doors of Death. Even if they did, a legion of Gaea’s strongest monsters guards the Doors on the Tartarus side. Annabeth and Percy can’t exactly launch a frontal assault.

Despite the terrible odds, Hazel, Annabeth, Percy, and the other demigods of the prophecy know that there is only one choice: to attempt the impossible. Not just for themselves, but for everyone they love. Even though love can be the riskiest choice of all.

Join the demigods as they face their biggest challenges yet in The House of Hades, the hair-raising penultimate book in the best-selling Heroes of Olympus series.

6. The Blood of Olympus

(The Heroes of Olympus #5)

18705209._SY475_

By Rick Riordan

My Rating🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Synopsis: Nico had warned them. Going through the House of Hades would stir the demigods’ worst memories. Their ghosts would become restless. Nico may actually become a ghost if he has to shadow-travel with Reyna and Coach Hedge one more time. But that might be better than the alternative: allowing someone else to die, as Hades foretold.

Jason’s ghost is his mother, who abandoned him when he was little. He may not know how he is going to prove himself as a leader, but he does know that he will not break promises like she did. He will complete his line of the prophecy: To storm or fire the world must fall.

Reyna fears the ghosts of her ancestors, who radiate anger. But she can’t allow them to distract her from getting the Athena Parthenos to Camp Half-Blood before war breaks out between the Romans and Greeks. Will she have enough strength to succeed, especially with a deadly hunter on her trail?

Leo fears that his plan won’t work, that his friends might interfere. But there is no other way. All of them know that one of the Seven has to die in order to defeat Gaea, the Earth Mother.

Piper must learn to give herself over to fear. Only then will she be able to do her part at the end: utter a single word.

Heroes, gods, and monsters all have a role to play in the climactic fulfillment of the prophecy in The Blood of Olympus, the electrifying finale of the best-selling Heroes of Olympus series.

5. Aurora Rising

(The Aurora Cycle #1)

30075662._SY475_

By Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

My Rating🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Synopsis: From the internationally bestselling authors of THE ILLUMINAE FILES comes an epic new science fiction adventure.

The year is 2380, and the graduating cadets of Aurora Academy are being assigned their first missions. Star pupil Tyler Jones is ready to recruit the squad of his dreams, but his own boneheaded heroism sees him stuck with the dregs nobody else in the Academy would touch…

A cocky diplomat with a black belt in sarcasm
A sociopath scientist with a fondness for shooting her bunkmates
A smart-ass techwiz with the galaxy’s biggest chip on his shoulder
An alien warrior with anger management issues
A tomboy pilot who’s totally not into him, in case you were wondering

And Ty’s squad isn’t even his biggest problem—that’d be Aurora Jie-Lin O’Malley, the girl he’s just rescued from interdimensional space. Trapped in cryo-sleep for two centuries, Auri is a girl out of time and out of her depth. But she could be the catalyst that starts a war millions of years in the making, and Tyler’s squad of losers, discipline-cases and misfits might just be the last hope for the entire galaxy.

They’re not the heroes we deserve. They’re just the ones we could find. Nobody panic.

My Rating🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Synopsis: Olive is always unlucky: in her career, in love, in…well, everything. Her identical twin sister Ami, on the other hand, is probably the luckiest person in the world. Her meet-cute with her fiancé is something out of a romantic comedy (gag) and she’s managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a series of Internet contests (double gag). Worst of all, she’s forcing Olive to spend the day with her sworn enemy, Ethan, who just happens to be the best man.

Olive braces herself to get through 24 hours of wedding hell before she can return to her comfortable, unlucky life. But when the entire wedding party gets food poisoning from eating bad shellfish, the only people who aren’t affected are Olive and Ethan. And now there’s an all-expenses-paid honeymoon in Hawaii up for grabs.

Putting their mutual hatred aside for the sake of a free vacation, Olive and Ethan head for paradise, determined to avoid each other at all costs. But when Olive runs into her future boss, the little white lie she tells him is suddenly at risk to become a whole lot bigger. She and Ethan now have to pretend to be loving newlyweds, and her luck seems worse than ever. But the weird thing is that she doesn’t mind playing pretend. In fact, she feels kind of… lucky.

To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. 2. The Beautiful

(The Beautiful #1)

42265183

By Renee Ahdieh

My Rating🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Synopsis: In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to seventeen-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans provides her a refuge after she’s forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent along with six other girls, Celine quickly becomes enamored with the vibrant city from the music to the food to the soirées and—especially—to the danger. She soon becomes embroiled in the city’s glitzy underworld, known as La Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of the group’s leader, the enigmatic Sébastien Saint Germain. When the body of one of the girls from the convent is found in the lair of La Cour des Lions, Celine battles her attraction to him and suspicions about Sébastien’s guilt along with the shame of her own horrible secret.

When more bodies are discovered, each crime more gruesome than the last, Celine and New Orleans become gripped by the terror of a serial killer on the loose—one Celine is sure has set her in his sights . . . and who may even be the young man who has stolen her heart. As the murders continue to go unsolved, Celine takes matters into her own hands and soon uncovers something even more shocking: an age-old feud from the darkest creatures of the underworld reveals a truth about Celine she always suspected simmered just beneath the surface.

At once a sultry romance and a thrilling murder mystery, master storyteller Renée Ahdieh embarks on her most potent fantasy series yet: The Beautiful.

Synopsis:

Meet the infamous Ross, black sheep of the family and bully extraordinaire.
I drink too much, smoke too much, screw around. I’ve hurt people, been in and out of prison. I’m a bastard, a beast.
I’m a goddamn bundle of joy.
I mean, my own dad tried to kill me, what does that tell you?
Then again, my dad did kill my mom, so maybe it isn’t just me. Who the hell knows.
The world sucks and I’m giving it the finger in every damn way, except…
Except there’s a girl. Pretty. Hot. Clever. She didn’t get the memo – that she should hate me, shun me, kick me when I’m down. That the world screwed us all over. She believes in the future – and sometimes she seems to even believe in me.
Big mistake. I’m bad news. I made her suffer in the past, and nothing has changed. I’m not an angel, not a saint. No good.
But for some reason I don’t get, I can’t let her go down with me. I find myself trying to be better for her, pretending to be someone I’m not.
And if that doesn’t ring some damn big alarm bells regarding my sanity, well… then I’m done already.

* This is the story of Ross, half-brother to Octavia, Gigi and Merc, set in the Wild Men series *

📝My Review📝:

No SaintNo Saint by Jo Raven

Between 4 & 4.5 Stars.
I have been a huge fan of this author for a very long time. It needs to be said because I might be a little biased. She hasn’t written a book that I didn’t love. Her heroes are so damaged and broken. Their pasts are some of the most horrific I’ve ever read. Jo Raven is not afraid to cross boundaries. Her books are not for you if you’re looking for a sugary read. I guarantee your heart will break and you will be so angry. So, so angry for what her heroes have suffered. And in No Saint, that applies in excess. You have to wonder how these young men survive the lot life has dealt them. They survive because they are strong heroes with strong heroines who will support and love them unconditionally.

In No Saint,Ross Jones is just surviving his days and nights. This isn’t easy to do when he is constantly tormented. The bully is being bullied. We met Ross early on in the Wild Men series when we were first introduced to Octavia. This book can be read as a standalone, however, I highly recommend you read the previous books. Ross has been an important and complex part of each and knowing about who he was will help you understand him. Maybe forgive him too.

Without giving you details, I found a few circumstances in this book to be unrealistic which is why I’m between 4 & 4.5 stars. But this is just my opinion so please take this lightly and decide for yourself. In addition, I wanted to see the antagonists in this book get what they deserved on the pages and not just an afterthought at the end.

Can bullies be forgiven? Can I forgive Ross for all the suffering he has caused? I wasn’t sure that I could. Fortunately, the author painted the pictures of Ross’s past which put me front and center at his own suffering. God, I wanted to hold him and hug him to me tightly. Fortunately, Ross had Luna and after she dealt with her own anger in regards to Ross’s bullying, she helped him to heal. She became his support. Support which he desperately needed. One of the aspects I appreciated was how the author grew and developed Ross and Luna’s characters. There was a lot of pain, a lot of history between them. It took a while before Luna could forgive Ross but not before she understood him.

This book is dark and intense. Very passionate, very sad and sometimes violent. But I promise, you will sigh with great relief and happiness in the end.

This is my honest and unbiased review. Thank you for taking the time to read it. 🙂

Inspired by S.E. Hinton, she always said that when she grew up, she would be a published author. This Midwest mom of boys has addictions to reading, road trips, hair dye, and the Oxford comma, and is thoroughly convinced at any given time the theme track to ‘My Three Sons’ will start playing in the background of her home.

📝My Review📝: 🌟🌟🌟🌟

End GameEnd Game by Dee Ellis

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a story of young love and how a variety of obstacles are prominent in getting in the way of a happily-ever-after. End Game is separated into three parts with two epilogues. The first half of the book is full of teenage drama. I swear, I felt like I was back in high school. In my mind, I was laughing because there were quite a few connections in this book for me during that first 45%. No, I was never lucky enough to catch the attention of the star quarterback however, my true connection was with Paisley, Hailie’s friend. While this book is Connor and Hailee’s story, we get a lot of Bran and Paisley as well. Just wondering if there will be a book in the future about them after college years.

So anyway, Hailee is the daughter of a retired military man. She has two wonderful parents and two protective brothers who will do anything for her. New to town, Hailee has grabbed the attention of Connor, the handsome, popular quarterback, who just so happens to be her neighbor. I want to mention that this book is a love-at-first-sight trope. In addition, Connor is an intense, over-the-top possessive hero. First friends, the growing relationship between Connor and Hailee is extremely intense. They were both possessive of one another and overly dramatic in several ways. While the sexual tension is a steadily growing burn, Connor and Hailee take things slow.

I don’t want to say anything about how the story unfolds because as I said earlier, there is quite a bit of teenage drama and the first half of the book was a little frustrating and monotonous at times. Because of the passion and heart of the H/h, I eagerly read on and truly enjoyed the second half of the book. As the few years passed since Connor and Hailee met, new obstacles brought out their maturity and the story became more endearing to me. Less over-the-top dramatic and more real life experiences. Once you finish reading, you won’t have a single doubt that these two absolutely adore each other. Their love for one another was so powerful and I was so happy with the ending. I especially enjoyed the bonus epilogue. It gives hope when there is darkness and fear for the future. Connor and Hailee learn that time is precious and they plan to live every day to the fullest.

This is my honest and unbiased review. Thank you for taking the time to read it. 🙂
