Synopsis:

A sweet and sassy contemporary romance from New York Times bestselling author MaryJanice Davidson!

Captain Ava Capp has been flying from her past for a decade. She’d much rather leave it, and her home state, behind forever. But when she finds herself back in Minnesota, against her better judgment, everything goes sideways in a way she never expected it to.

M.E. Dr. Tom Baker has never forgotten Ava and the cold case she ran away from. When she shows up unexpectedly in town, in spite of himself, sparks fly. Which is terrible because he can’t stop his growing attraction to her. Can these two Type-A’s let their guards down and work together to put Ava’s tragic past behind her for good? And keep their hands off each other at the same time?

My Review:  3.5 Stars

Truth, Lies, and Second DatesTruth, Lies, and Second Dates by MaryJanice Davidson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

3.5 Stars…
I was actually torn between 3 & 3.5 stars for this rating. I ended up generously awarding the latter. Truth, Lies and Second Dates had the potential to be a five star read for me. Unfortunately, I didn’t love it, didn’t connect nor did I feel the writing was smooth. The pace was slow in my opinion. At least the first half of the book felt that way. This book is 320 pages but it felt like much more.

From the synopsis, I inferred the story to be different from what it was. The premise was explained well enough but the execution didn’t work for me. To be honest, I expected a darker tone. Ava, one of the main characters, was too sarcastic for me to take seriously; and her humor made me cringe during certain conversations. There is a time and a place for everything. This author didn’t feel that way. As a result, I wasn’t laughing all the time. The dialogue between characters was okay, but at times I had to re-read paragraphs because I could not follow along. Several times, I wondered if I missed some vital information because too many aspects didn’t make sense. Another aspect that interrupted my reading flow was the inserts of definitions at the end of each chapter and way too many parenthesis throughout the text. Also, the sudden switches in POV were another issue I had with flow. This book was very busy.

At some point after 30%, I ignored the monotony and decided if I wanted to like this book at all, I would view this story as a murder mystery and not a romantic comedy, as well as ignore the numerous onslaught of tropes. While the romance aspect ended up being cute, I didn’t feel this book was romance. That’s ok, though because I knew going in that the author was integrating many tropes; unfortunately that just didn’t work for me. But thankfully, one stood out so I focused on that. The “who done it” aspect. And to my delight and surprise, I didn’t see the end coming. Nor was I able to guess the murderer until that moment of resolution. I warn you now, there is no foreshadowing in this book. Situations just spontaneously arise. That said, regarding the climax, or my view on it, it was rushed. I had to re-read part of that final scene a few times.

To sum this review up, I didn’t hate the book. While there were parts of the writing I didn’t connect with, there were a few that I delighted in. This author took the dark undertone from the main focus and wrote characters with intellect, witticism, flaws, outrageousness and created an original story. Truth, Lies, and Second Dates, was most definitely something I have never read before. Nor have I read this author before. You cannot take this book seriously.

I want to close this review with one thought. If you are researching this book, deciding if you will read it, don’t look too deeply into the reviews. There are many mixed feelings about this book. Some loved it, some hated it and like me, some thought is was okay. We all have different preferences when we chose a book and while this book didn’t resonate with me in a fully posiitve light, you may love it.

This is my honest and unbiased review and I thank you for taking the time to read it. 🙂

My Review:

A Family For Christmas (The Burlesons of Texas, #2)A Family For Christmas by Nola Cross

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What a sweet book to put me in the Christmas mood. This is the time of year I look forward to the most. Fall is and has always been my favorite of the four seasons. Christmas is my favorite holiday and each year I anticipate all the amazing Christmas romances to come. Once I start reading the holiday novels, I don’t stop until sometime in January. So far, this past month I’ve read a handful of them and each one was a breath of fresh air. I am not a first-time reader to this author so I knew I was going to love this book. A Family For Christmas was endearing, heartwarming and not only did I enjoy the book, I am excited for Christmas this year. 2020 has been a horrible year for so many of us with the Covid-19 virus affecting so, so many of us. My family, including myself were sick. In fact, I was sick with Flu for weeks starting in early January and then we all came down with Coronavirus in March/April, each of us affected with similar AND different symptoms. It left a mark on my family we will never forget. And because of months of illness, I could not read much. As a result, catching up on my reading has been a God send.

This book has amazing characters and an interesting, engaging story. While this book is the second in the Burleson’s series it can be read as a stand-alone. I actually did not read book one yet. That said, while I fully enjoyed this book, I believe that had I read book one beforehand, A Family For Christmas would have been even better given the characters from book were a part of the story.

The synopsis gives you a very good idea where the story is going and while many aspects were predictable, I did not mind. This book grabs my interest from the very first chapter and by the end, I was wishing for more. I am looking forward to the third book in the series where I know I will revisit with past characters. This is one of those series you’ll want to read. Filled with emotion, only a bit of angst, a lot of anticipation and lovable characters, A Family For Christmas found a special place in my heart.

This is my honest and unbiased review and I thank you for taking the time to read it. 🙂

An Irresistible Force (Handymen, #2)An Irresistible Force by Rosanna Leo

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5 STARS!!!
Fantastic book! I am blown away by this author! An Irresistible Force is only the second book I’ve ever read from Rosanna Leo and it is an understatement to say I am impressed. The first book in this series, A Good Man was amazing as well. That book was original and real. I know the research this author went to, to make everything flow with the subject was spot on. In An Irresistible Force, the subject research was even more obvious. This book was about the consequences of bullying and the residual effects that bleed into adulthood. Both the hero and heroine had been bullied when they were in their early teens. Everything, that the author wrote was realistic. I hate bullies. I believe we have all been bullied at some point in our lives; by family, by friends, and even by strangers. I admit, I’ve been there. Not to the extreme that is talked about in this book but it was enough to scare me. I looked over my shoulder many times. I am so thankful for the crew of friends I made during those years because they helped me see I am strong, and loved. Once my self-esteem grew, I easily brushed off the negativity and when the bullies got no reaction, they left me alone. So, anyway I just spewed all that to say I know what it feels like and my connection to the H/h is strong.

Bernie and Eli were amazing together. You knew right away there was chemistry. However, both these amazing characters had walls as tall as a fortress around them. I am not going into any details of their relationship. I will tell you this couple takes their time, getting to know one another before even a first kiss. As a reader, given the premise, I truly appreciated the anticipation because I knew when the moment came, Bernie and Eli would melt my Kindle. This book has many feels to it. Personally, while feeling a range of different emotions throughout, my strongest were empathy and anger. That said, by the last chapters I was gloriously happy the way things were happening. Every aspect of the story is realistic, yet entertaining and infinitely endearing at the same time.

I mentioned earlier that the first book in this series was amazing. While I loved that first book, I love An Irresistible Force even more. I can’t even imagine how the author will top this. The next book is Nick’s; the last Zorn brother to find his happily-ever-after. I can’t even imagine what the premise of that book will be; all I know is I will be standing in line for it. I highly recommend this series as must read. These are the books that come along only once in a while. You won’t want to miss them. Trust me. I just want to mention that while there may be triggers for some readers, the bullying was referenced in memories or discussions between the H/h throughout the story.

This is my honest and unbiased review and I thank you for taking the time to read it. 🙂

My 📝Review📝:

Take Me CompletelyTake Me Completely by C. Lesbirel

4.5 Stars
Take Me Completely is the fourth book in the Cockpit series by authors C. Lesbirel and Britney Bell. This book tells how Sullivan Parker finds his happily-ever-after. One, even he’ll admit, that he wasn’t looking for. But these things seem to jump up at you and so here goes the story of billionaire pilot of Parker airlines. These Parker siblings are like none I’ve read before. Not too many hero pilots come my way. When I was first offered the Christmas novella for an honest review last Fall, I jumped at it. I love romances set around holidays and Christmas romances are my favorite genre of all. In the novella, Cockpit Christmas, the Parker family is introduced while they are vacationing away for the holidays which is their tradition. The novella is told from the POVs of the Parker parents. I loved that book so much so I couldn’t wait for the first Parker sibling’s book. So far, each book is better than the one before. Both these authors write so well together that you can’t tell where one ends and the other begins.

While I loved Sullivan from the beginning (actually I’ve loved him from the previous books), Hope was not easy to love. Let me explain. Hope Carson is a famous country music artist. She does not have time for relationships nor is she looking for one. While she is fed up with her lifestyle, she loves making music and performing for her fans. I think my biggest problem with Hope was her hot and cold persona. I adored Sully so much and didn’t like how she treated him for the first half or so of the book. Of course, Hope couldn’t resist the Parker charm and she gave in to her growing feelings.

I don’t want to tell you about their journey because I want you to love this book on your own. If you haven’t read the previous books, don’t worry because they are all stand-alone. But I do recommend you read them. I believe your reading experience will be even better. As usual, I can’t wait for the next Parker sibling’s book. Thankfully, these books have been releasing in a timely manner which I appreciate very much.

This is my honest and unbiased review and I thank you for taking the time to read it. 🙂

Synopsis:

“Got a name, my princess?”

When Joelle Fielding attends a function for Chicago’s society elites, she’s stunned to find herself swept off her feet by a man who believes that not only is she a princess, but that she’s HIS princess. Falling in love at first sight isn’t a part of her career-oriented life goals, but with the sexy Gus Bloch insisting she’s meant for him, those life goals might be changing.

By fourteen, Gus had been on his own on the Southside’s mean streets. When life had been at its bleakest, he’d dreamed of his future and the kind of woman he would someday share his life with. One look at Joelle, and he knows he’s finally found her. Nothing will stop him from convincing her that he’s the man for her—not even Joelle herself.

Joelle has never wanted anyone like she wants Gus, but all too soon insta-love and the demands of reality find themselves on a collision course. Is Gus really the man for her when he’s forced to see she’s no one’s princess?

***This novella is a standalone prequel to the novel, HOUSE OF PAYNE: LOKI. Because of that, this novella has only a small epilogue (sorry!). There are no love triangles, no cheating, and no cliffhangers. HEA guaranteed. Due to adult language and sexual content, this novella is not intended for people under the age of eighteen.***

A slow smile curled his mouth, and to Joelle’s surprise she found she couldn’t look away from the two perfect dimples that appeared in his lean, clean-shaven cheeks. Had there ever been a more perfectly symmetrical face, with sculpted cheekbones, squared-off jaw and, heaven above, dimples? The more she saw of him, the more she realized that perfection could exist. “The moment I saw you, everything about you became my business.”
“Oh, really?” Wildly her heart bounced around in her chest like one of those bouncy balls she’d loved as a child. “How do you figure that?”
“It’s pretty simple.” He shifted a shoulder, like freaking Atlas shrugging. “I saw you standing there, and something inside me clicked into place. I’m not fighting that, and neither should you. It won’t do you any good.”
“My goodness.” It took all her strength not to pearl-clutch, but damn, it was hard. This man came on like a freight train, and for a wayward moment she could only wonder what he was like in bed… “I think there’s a song like that.”
“I guess this could be called an enchanted evening, now that I think about it. It’s not every day you meet the one that stops you in your tracks and makes you think of things like forever.”
Okay, pearl-clutching was a necessity when a man said things like that. “Anyone ever tell you that you have a tendency to overwhelm?”
“Not my fault. I’ve lost one helluva lot of time with you, so I need to catch up.”
“Catch up? We just met.”
“Yeah, but I’ve been looking for you my whole damn life. Got a shit-ton of catching up to do.”

His Princess (A novella from the world of House of Payne)His Princess by Stacy Gail

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

First thing I need to say…..If you don’t like instalove/lust, and an alpha hero who can be a huge a**hole, then this book isn’t for you. When I accepted this book for review, the author warned me there would be a moment where I would want to strangle Gus and she was so right, lol. He is intense and takes cocky and arrogant to the extreme. Joelle, on the other hand, was perfect. She is independent and will always fight for what is right. There were moments I was so proud of her. That said, after Gus realized his mistake, he was all in trying to fix it. I love a groveling hero.

I won’t go into details as this book is short. I did enjoy it; the author writes well and kept me engaged. I will also say, this is only the first for me; I will definitely read more from this author. Stacy Gail was a first time read and I am happy to say I look forward to more of her titles. I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole on Goodreads while stalking her House of Payne series. There are so many books, I’ll just have to start from the beginning.

This is my honest and unbiased review and I thank you for taking the time to read it. 🙂

This was my first book from this author, and I loved everything about it!
This book was amazing in many ways AND I’m thrilled I found a new author to read. Show Stopper is a spin-off of one of B.J.’s series.’ She has many books that are interconnected stand-alone and I am definitely going to be checking them out. One of my favorite aspects of any novel are secondary characters. If written well, they can make the book greater. If not, then focus is only on the main H/h and as a result the book can become a bit monotonous. That is not the case with this book. There are many secondary characters who, have a story to tell, a background you want to learn about. Truthfully, with this book, one of the secondary characters I want to see get a happily-ever-after is Scotty. There are quite a few characters so I hope the author will give us his book.

Now on to Show Stopper.. At first, I didn’t get the title. What does it have to do with a real estate agent and a firefighter? When that bit was revealed to me, I swooned. This hero was amazing. I also loved that he was older, in his late 30’s. Marco was at a place in his life where meaningless hookups got old. He wanted something more. He wanted a woman to wake up with and come home to every night. But Marco didn’t want a Suzy-homemaker. No, he wanted a sassy, independent woman who knew her own worth and made sure he knew it too. The moment Marco met Renee; he knew she could be the one he’s been searching for. Renee was a great character and I loved her take no nonsense persona. She was strong-willed and a go-getter. But she was also kind, caring, loving and deep inside, a woman afraid of having her heart broken again. The relationship between Marco and Renee started off slowly, as it should. Their chemistry was scorching from the very moment they met, however they did not jump into each other’s arms immediately.

I’m not going into details so you can enjoy this book on your own and I’ve no doubt you will. This book has humor, light angst, if any, a great group of supporting characters and a swoon-worthy hero. Of course there is an antagonist as well which adds a hint of suspense. All of these elements add up to a truly enjoyable read. I definitely recommend this book; a great start to B.J. Harvey’s new series.

This is my honest and unbiased review and I thank you for taking the tie to read it. 🙂

From Donna VanLiere, the New York Times bestselling author of The Christmas Hope series comes another heartwarming, inspirational story for the holidays, The Christmas Table.

In June 1972, John Creighton determines to build his wife Joan a kitchen table. His largest project to date had been picture frames but he promises to have the table ready for Thanksgiving dinner. Inspired to put something delicious on the table, Joan turns to her mother’s recipes she had given to Joan when she and John married.

In June 2012, Lauren Mabrey discovers she’s pregnant. Gloria, Miriam, and the rest of her friends at Glory’s Place begin to pitch in, helping Lauren prepare their home for the baby. On a visit to the local furniture builder, Lauren finds a table that he bought at a garage sale but has recently refinished. Once home, a drawer is discovered under the table which contains a stack of recipe cards. Growing up in one foster home after another, Lauren never learned to cook and is fascinated as she reads through the cards. Personal notes have been written on each one from the mother to her daughter and time and again Lauren wonders where they lived, when they lived, and in a strange way, she feels connected to this mother and her daughter and wants to make the mother proud.

The story continues to from 1972 to 2012 as Joan battles breast cancer and Lauren learns to cook, preparing for the baby’s arrival. As Christmas nears, can Lauren unlock the mystery of the table, and find the peace she’s always longed for?

The Christmas TableThe Christmas Table by Donna VanLiere

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book was nothing I expected and everything I loved! First, let me say this book is not a romance. It’s about love, hope, faith and inspiration. I wanted to read something a little different from my usual genres and this book was perfect for that.

There is nothing I love more than small-town stories. The loyalty, love and friendships between everyone is rarely something I ever see in real life. In fact, I haven’t seen small towns, or neighborhoods in my experience, come together since I was a child. This world we live in has changed so much in the past thirty years. When a book like The Christmas Table comes along, I feel like I’ve just taken a long overdue breath of fresh air.

There are three main characters in this book and many secondaries that are prominent in carrying this story along. Without them, there is no story. Everyone has a particular part to place. The book is written with two time elements, jumping back and forth every chapter or so between 1972 and the present. At first, I was not a fan of the switching back and forth so frequently because there was not enough focus on one particular character in order for them to grow. But I quickly realized that this book is not about character growth and development. We are simply being told a story. A story we need to pay particular attention to. Among these characters is a mystery. A Christmas table is the main focus, and one that brings the climax to completion. I am not going to give away any details on the plot. This was a lovely, refreshing and endearing story and I want you to experience it on your own.

I do want to add that there are quite a few moments of sadness, and even more of humor. There is a bit of mystery but no angst. This was a well-balanced novel; one I will not soon forget. While I read a lot, and enjoy most of what I read, it isn’t frequent when books as refreshing and endearing as The Christmas Table come my way. When they do, I’m smiling for days, remembering moments in the book, fondly.

One more thing I’d like to mention is after selecting this book to read, I realized I had read this author years before with The Christmas Shoes which was turned into a movie. That story had me in tears. This author is talented when it comes to pulling heartstrings. She has written
quite a few other Christmas themed books that I am planning to read and am looking forward to the holiday season to do just that.

This is my honest and unbiased review and I thank you for taking the time to read it. 🙂

Love's Bitter HarvestLove’s Bitter Harvest by Jas T. Ward

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wow, what an incredible story. Love’s Bitter Harvest brought forth so many feels. Anger and sadness being at the front. I want to be very careful with this review not to say too much. If you’ve read the blurb, then you already have a good idea of the premise. While, in my own heart, I believe all the circumstances of what happen stem from Katy leaving. As the story goes on, I see that there were also other elements to blame such as miscommunication, lack of respect and a huge amount of stubbornness. You will hear a lot of, “You left me!” & “You didn’t ask me to stay!” At the beginning, I completely blamed Katy. She was so wrong, and it did appear to me that she didn’t love Matt enough to stay. As I read on, I understood that pride took a huge role in the halt to their seemingly perfect marriage. By the end, I liked Katy but still couldn’t forgive her for leaving the way she did. Don’t get me wrong because Matt could have stopped her, could have gone after her or answer her first phone calls at any time. He didn’t. So, while Katy was the initial break in their marriage, I feel that because of stubbornness and pride (on both parts) things could have been settled a lot sooner and Matt would not have been where he was on the night of his accident. Again, this is only my opinion. I can’t help the way I feel.

This is the first book I’ve read by Jas T. Ward. As a blogger, many releases pass my desk and I try to read the blurbs on all of them before I post the release to my followers. I do this because I don’t want to miss out on a great story. After reading the blurb for Loves’s Bitter Harvest, I purchased it immediately. Even before I hit publish on my blog.

This is one of the best written books I read this year. I won’t soon be forgetting these characters or the obstacles they faced getting back together. This author has a way of tugging at your heart, giving you the experience of being there rather than just reading about it. I want to warn you that there are many heartbreaking moments; I constantly prayed for a miracle. Matt had so much more to deal with than the aftermath of his accident. He also needed healing in his heart. He needed someone to help him see his flaws. By the end of the book, Matt’s growth as a character made me so proud. He also made me sad for the things he felt he needed to give up. Katy and Matt’s journey has quite a few obstacles in the way. There are misunderstandings and pride that seem to always be a factor. I am not going to give away the end of the book. The last chapters were so satisfying and despite me wishing more for Matt and Katy, I was happy for them. They were truly happy and, in the end, that is all that matters.

I can’t wait to read another book by this author. Her writing talent truly appealed to me as a reader and I’m looking forward to more.

This is my honest and unbiased review and I that you for taking the time to read it. 🙂

One Hundred Reasons (An Aspen Cove Romance Book 1)One Hundred Reasons by Kelly Collins

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

How many books are just sitting on your Kindle or bookshelf just waiting to be read? For me, there is way too many to count. While this book wasn’t nearly on my Kindle as long as a lot of others, it was there too long as far as I’m concerned. I am kicking myself for waiting so long to read this, even though, truthfully, it couldn’t be helped. This has been a tough year. Everything normal in my life has been altered, including my reading time. But I’m finally there, for now at least. After I read One Hundred Reasons not only did I find a new series to binge, I found a new author to love. Everything about this book spoke to all my literary desires. All the feels are present, some angst, some mystery and a town filled with loyal, caring, lovable characters. Even the flawed, cantankerous, characters found their way into my heart. This book made me smile; I was often sad and heartbroken as well. I had a memorable reading experience with this. In fact, right after I read the last page, I downloaded the next book in the series which I am already halfway through.

Aspen Cove appears at first glance, a sad town. Desolate, quiet, pitiful. Looks can often be deceiving and in this case they certainly were. I won’t go into any details because you need to experience this amazing story, amazing town and its residents all on your own. Because this book is the start of the series, it is packed with details, characters, a bit of mystery and the perfect introductions. I want to visit Aspen Cove; I want to live there.

While the one person who ties everything together isn’t actually there, you can feel her presence everywhere.

This is Sage and Cannon’s story. Sage is such a caring individual you couldn’t help but love her from the first pages. And while Cannon appears at first a big grump, there are good reasons for that. In my opinion, his character was the most vulnerable. His situation made my heart hurt. These two don’t get off to a good start but that changes quickly enough. Cannon is a hero you won’t soon forget. And he deserves everything good life can give him.

The next book in the series is about town newcomer Katie and Cannon’s brother Bowie who for good reasons, left town ten years earlier. And since I’m already halfway through it, I’ll tell you that that is another emotional story with the same loving small-town dynamic.

These books are stand-alones but I would recommend you start at the beginning to have the best experience.

You know when you read that book that speaks to your heart, connects you to the story in a way that the book is all you can think about for hours, days after you read it? Well, One Hundred Reasons is one of those books for me.

This is my honest and unbiased review and I that you for taking the tie to read it. 🙂
