Lucas
Storey’s life is all about college, studying, and finishing his medical degree.
That’s until he moves in with his older brother and meets his motorcycle club
friends. Only, new people make Lucas nervous, almost to the extent of peeing
himself, but he soon realises they’re great people and will accept him as he
is.
Now, if
only he can stop thinking of a certain grumpy biker, things will be good.
Never
before has Wade “Wreck” Williams noticed the same sex, or at least not until
Lucas crashes into their lives. And notice Lucas he does. But that’s not all.
He wants to get to know the man, and he kind of likes looking at Lucas too.
None of it makes sense, and Wreck will fight it for that reason alone.
When Lucas
thinks he can go out with a someone who’s not Wreck—and jealously rears its
ugly head to a point Wreck just has to step in—it’s clear that he may just be
wrecked forever.

The front
door opened abruptly behind me. I bit my bottom lip to keep in the scream. But
that didn’t stop me from jumping and stumbling as I turned, and if it wasn’t
for Death’s hand wrapping around my arm, I would have met the floor once more
that night.
However,
when I looked up, I realized there was still a possibility of dropping to the
floor. The most gorgeous man I had ever seen stood just inside the doorway, scanning
the room. If it wasn’t for his hands fisted at his sides and the scowl on his
face, I may have fallen to the floor in awe of his beauty.
I took
another quick glance around the room and noticed my brother did, in fact, have
some good-looking friends. All of them could be on the cover of a magazine. I
wasn’t sure what it was about the scowling man that set me off in a sweating,
peeing-my-pants, “holy crap he’s looking at me” moment with my pulse racing,
but he did. His dark brown hair was shaved at the sides, and the top was
longish and messy, some of it flopped in his dark green eyes. He would probably
punch me if I tried to push his hair back though. He was tall, my short frame
only reaching his shoulders. His tight black tee showed off the muscles in his
arms, and his dark ripped jeans surrounded thick thighs.
I jolted
and pulled my gaze up quickly when Death said, “Wreck, you took forever,
fucker. Get in here and meet Saint’s brother, Lucas.”
Saint?
Who was
Saint?
I wasn’t a
brother of Saint.
“Lucas, I’m
Saint. It’s my club name,” Zion called; he must have seen the confused look on
my face.
Nodding, I
glanced back to Wreck and did a lame wave before I grabbed my own arm with my
other hand. “Ah, s’up.”
S’up?
Was I a
gangster now?

Author: Jaime Reese
Genre: M/M Contemporary Romance (stand alone)
Release Date: June 16, 2020

Two men. One sweet dream of family and forever.

Gabriel “Bull” del Toro loves his fast-paced globe-trotting job, but aches for an honest relationship and the trust that comes with it. After a few too many heartbreaks, he’s nearly given up hope of finding that special someone.
Until Ben.
Born deaf, Ben is used to working twice as hard for what he wants, but risking a newfound friendship on an impossible dream is scary. After all, there’s one lesson he’s learned: everything is temporary—freedom, friends, even family.
Neither man expects the undeniable spark between them or for every moment together to fuel that connection. For the first time, a happily ever after is within reach, but they must trust that the dream of acceptance, family, and a place to call home is more than a sweet fantasy.
It can be forever.
————
A Sweet Man is an interconnected standalone within The Men of Halfway House series. It is a story about the power of love, the meaning of family, and never giving up on a dream. It includes wounded hearts, an age-gap romance, and enough cake and sweetness to give you a toothache.

Chapter 1

Mid-January

Ben ran into the bedroom and swung the door shut. He leaned back against the door, gasping each breath while clutching the cell phone to his chest. Seconds. It was all he had before that bastard came barging in to take what he wanted.
Pushing off the door, he leapt over his still packed duffle bag sitting on the floor and wedged his body in the narrow space behind the bed. He grabbed the edge of the bed frame and pushed.
Damn bed wasn’t moving.
He gritted his teeth and pushed harder, finally shoving the bed on its rusty wheels across the carpeted floor. With the bed bumped up against the door, he had a moment of reprieve to take a deep breath.
His eyes burned as he stared at the door and a memory flashed in his mind.
Once his parole had been granted, Sam had asked him to make a simple decision: Halfway House or this place.
Another stupid decision made.
He glanced around the room—at the peeling paint, dirty carpet, and iron bars on the windows. This place wasn’t Halfway House. Both houses were in Miami-Dade County and about an hour apart, but there was a world of distance between them.
Climbing onto the mattress, he knee-walked toward the foot of the bed. Carefully, he inched closer and flattened his hand against the worn faux wood. One pounding thump against the door vibrated against his palm.
Then another and another, each harder than the one before.
He gasped when the mattress shook beneath his knees.
A punch from Jake would cause some damage—he had a pulsing black eye to prove that.
He pulled his hand away. Even though he couldn’t hear it, he imagined each strike came with an accompanying yell. Maybe even a curse. Or two. He crab-walked backward, away from the door now visibly moving with each strike.
He retreated to the wall, keeping his eyes trained on the single point of entry in front of him. First day at the new halfway house and he already had to deal with bullies.
If he were at HH, things would be so different. The house owners would never allow violence under their roof. Julian would have swooped in like some super ninja and caught Jake’s fist midair.
Ben leaned back against the wall and slid down until his ass hit the dirty carpeted floor. He tightened his grip on the cell phone in his hand. The punch to the face had been a small price to pay if he still had his phone.
Correction… His lifeline.
Now he realized why Sam had to gain special permission for him to have one. Every place had different rules and having a cell phone was a violation of this house’s rules. That detail hadn’t clicked until two other residents had practically salivated at the sight of his phone when he had pulled it out from his back pocket to view the incoming text message. Like a pack of wolves, another resident had joined in. In true alpha form, Jake had pushed the three of them aside and taken the lead, delivering a punch to the side of Ben’s face that had shoved him to the ground.
They had expected him to quiver, give in, huddle into a ball or surrender his phone. They hadn’t counted on him tightening the grip on his lifeline or his speedy escape.
He banged his head back against the wall.
Bump, bump, bump.
He was tired of life kicking him in the nuts.
Tired of second-guessing every damn thing he did.
Tired of how he kept making the wrong decisions.
Five years ago, he had trusted the wrong people. Friends had used him as a scapegoat and that had resulted in a grand theft charge. The judge had shown him mercy during sentencing, splitting his time—twelve months in jail and four years on probation.
With the jail time completed, he had ended up at Halfway House while transitioning into his probation term. He had been on the right path afterward for almost two years. He had reconnected with his sister and had moved in with her. He had secured a steady job, working with Shaw.
Until the day he had gotten into a friend’s car during his lunch break.
He hadn’t known the car was stolen. He couldn’t have guessed that one choice would have resulted in a probation violation that would send him to a state prison to complete the remaining two years of his sentence.
He screwed his eyes shut, instantly wincing at the pain of his swelling eye.
He missed Julian and his partner, Matt. He missed Ryan and Shaw, the friends he had made during his stay at Halfway House. But he was too embarrassed to see any of them. Regardless of how many times he had analyzed the situation in his mind, it was his bad decision that had landed him in prison.
He wrapped his arms around his midsection. Times like these, he sought the comfort of his plush bunny. He wasn’t a kid anymore, but the worn plush rabbit was stuffed with family memories. Frayed and patched together like the sole survivor of a zombie experiment, the plush toy was likely lost, just like he felt. Or maybe someone had found it and discarded it with a cringe at its horror-movie-like appearance. It wouldn’t surprise him.
Everything was temporary.
His parents, the few people he thought were friends while growing up. The revolving door of families over the years.
His relationship with his sister.
He leaned his head back against the wall and stared at the ceiling, fighting back the tears. She had warned him to stay out of trouble. He hadn’t even had a chance to apologize to her before getting hauled away. He had burned that bridge. More like annihilated it with C4 for good measure.
After that, nothing had mattered. He didn’t care to see anyone else, even though Shaw had tried to visit him several times.
The sting in his eyes reappeared. He needed to look ahead and deal with this current situation. He shouldn’t have resisted Sam’s insistence on returning to Halfway House. But the thought of seeing the disappointment in Julian’s pale green eyes, or his partner’s sad smile, tore through Ben’s heart. He couldn’t risk disillusioning every person who might care. Matt would take Ben’s failure personally. And Julian would console his partner and share that pain.
He couldn’t do that to them.
The phone in his hand vibrated, pulling him from his thoughts. He swiped at the screen, blinking a few times. His heartbeat quickened as panic set in. His vision was a little fuzzy. Dammit. The black eye was going to be a problem. He needed the clarity. Otherwise, he’d have trouble reading text messages and other people’s lips. He pulled the phone closer and farther away, hoping to pinpoint a spot in his line of sight that would make the display clearer to read the new text message.
You didn’t respond. You ALWAYS respond. I’m on my way.
The knot in his chest lessened reading Sam’s words. His reintegration officer hadn’t given up on him after dropping him off at this nightmare of a house a few hours ago. He glanced up at the door when the bed shifted. Jake was pissed—pissed enough to hit the door hard enough to move the bed on the carpet.
He had to get out of here. Now.
He quickly texted a reply. I can’t stay here. His attention snapped up when the bed shifted again. He kicked out his feet and pushed them against the bed frame, hoping to add some additional resistance until Jake tired himself out. Please hurry, he wrote in another text before Sam had a chance to respond.
Life hadn’t been kind, but he managed the best he could, always trying to find the good in others.
But the people outside that door, in this place…there was no good here to find.
Ben closed his eyes and held his phone close to his chest, willing Sam to respond. He gasped when the phone vibrated moments later. He blinked a few times, focusing his vision, and releasing a shaky breath at Sam’s reply.
I’ll be there soon. I called Aidan. He’s on his way.
Ben’s shoulders slumped. Relief or embarrassment, he wasn’t sure. He battled with the nagging tug in the back of his mind, worried about seeing the detective again, the one who had taken the time to help Ben reconnect with his sister after so many years.
But he’d take the embarrassment. Aidan was the only man who could likely stop Jake with a simple glare, and make a few phone calls to push Sam’s request through the system to move Ben elsewhere. Right now, he’d take the rescue any way he could get it. Welcomed it with open arms, even if he needed to beg or subject himself to a reprimanding lecture.
He wouldn’t survive here.
They would eventually take his phone and wouldn’t care about the damage they left in their wake. A black eye could easily lead to a broken arm or hand if he continued to resist. Without his phone or use of his hands, he wouldn’t be able to communicate in the hearing world.
He closed his eyes and leaned his head back against the wall.
After leaving his childhood home, there had only been one place where he had felt safe.
Right now, that was exactly where he needed to be.
He just hoped Sam arrived in time to take him there.

Hale
I woke up wrapped in Quells arms. We were home. Wed been here for weeks
and I still wasn’t used to it. The light streamed across the foot of our bed in
a fractal pattern. I could smell the ocean or maybe it was my imagination. How
easy this was. We had a ticking clock, but it had been a small taste of how our
time off would be. How waking up with Quell would be when we didn’t have to be
on set eighteen hours a day. Our life was slow and I loved him more every day
we spent here. Our demeanor had changed with the pace of our life.
He was lovely lying there still asleep. Id never seen a more
beautiful human in my life and he was my partner. It was hard to believe we had
a week left of this.
And then uncertainty.
I didn’t like going into a drastic change in our relationship without
building up to it, but we didn’t have much choice. I guess it was going to be
trial by fire. Because for as many times as I
d tried to talk to
Quell about it he hadn’t seemed to want to. So I
d left it. We loved
each other. We
d find a way to make the time apart work.
I had nothing booked for the next nine months, and Quell had two movies.
I was about to detangle myself to go make coffee when Quells phone started to
ring. I reached for my phone to check what time it was. After seven. I was
shocked he
d slept so
long. More often than not, since being home, he was off wandering the house
before I was even awake. I
d gotten so used to it—it was strange to wake up in
bed with him. Maybe he was settling into our life here.
I pressed into him and kissed along the back of his neck. Maybe I would
stay awhile. Quell was better than coffee any day.
Is that my phone?” Quell mumbled, sleep evident in
his tone.
I think so.”
He groaned and rolled towards me. Who would be calling
me so early?”
No clue.”
What time is it?”
Just after seven. Im shocked youre still in bed.” I
pushed my fingers through his hair.
He turned and kissed my palm. I am too. I slept hard.”
You needed it.” More than I even think he realized.
Im sure I did. Maybe it will be a trend.”
I hope so.” At least until he left.
The phone quieted and he kissed me. I lost track of time in Quells lips and soft
touches. It was an entirely new way to wake up. One we
d not even had filming
Pirate Night. Then we were eating, rushing off to call or Quell had been
up on days off. Lots of training sessions. I liked that he
d moved them to a
different time.
I stroked my fingers down his sides and over his back. He grabbed me in a
hug so tight I could feel his heart beating against mine. We laughed and kissed
and I was happy.
Happy felt good. Not that Id been particularly not happy before meeting Quell,
but this was a whole new level of the experience. Now if only my career was
less uncertain I
d feel a whole lot better, but I guess that was the
nature of the job. Quell would get a contract for another season of Pirate
Night
before he left. I had faith.
The vibrating started back up.
Who is calling me this early?” Quell said through a
yawn rolling half out of my arms to grab his phone. He squinted at it then
answered.
No idea. Who is it?” I asked before realizing it
might not be the best to expose the fact we were in bed together, although
anyone calling his cell would probably know.
He put his hand over the speaker, as if that did anything, and said, It’s our publicist.”
Wed shared
one now since he
d left his other because of the conflict of interest
with Rachael. Mark was good at his job and more on top of things than Quell’s
last one had been.
Yes, Hale is with me,” Quell said with a chuckle and
I was sure I knew what was running through his mind.
Naked wrapped up with
me.’ “I’m going to put you on speaker.”
Quell clicked the button and held the phone between us.
Hey, Mark.”
Hello, Hale. Since I have you both—” He wasn’t one
to beat around the bush, so he dove right into it.
There are some
pictures from last night I woke up to questions about. They are already being
widely run… so the concern is more: do we have a comment?”

Ellis.
I feel him.
Before I even lay eyes on him, I sense him.
The air in the room seems charged, my awareness of him heightened, but he is a stranger to me.
Unfamiliar, yet familiar.
Unknown, yet known.
And something inside me says, “Hello, I’ve been waiting for you.”
Macsen.
I see him.
I’ve seen him a hundred times before and I know this will not be the last, but each time I do, I feel it.
That invisible tether.
I remember everything.
I remember him.
His eyes lock with mine and then move away too quickly.
I am nothing more than a stranger, another face in the crowd.
While he is my favourite hello, and my hardest goodbye.

“You’re in front of me, I can see you, but not only with my eyes. Your voice, the way you speak to me, I hear it, but not only with my ears. My body knows yours, Macs.” I rub a hand over my abdomen. “It knows you in here.” I tap my temple with my finger. “It knows you in here.” And finally, I place a palm on my chest over my heart. “And in here, in here it’s hollow, empty, waiting, always waiting.”
“For what?” His words are a mere whisper of air.
“For you.”

At ages fourteen to sixteen – her poetry phase after falling in love with Dylan Thomas and e.e. cummings – she had a few poems published, but life, love, and family overtook her dreams, and she was in her thirties when she began the scary journey of self-publishing.

Her debut and internationally best-selling series, ‘Love by Numbers’, are a set of interconnected stand-alone romances, all with varying themes of love. From second-chance to romantic comedy and M/M romance. These stories do not need to be read in order (apart from the opening duet Nineteen/Twenty One), in fact, she is often guilty of advising readers to start at the last book and work their way back through.

Contemporary romance is not the only genre she writes, her second series, ‘The Red Order’, is as dark and twisted as you can get, but there is beauty there too if you can open your eyes and look.

With many more stories bursting to be set free, she hopes you stay along for the ride.

She loves to connect with readers, so please feel free to friend/follow her on Facebook, IG, and Twitter or join her reader’s group, E’s Elite ❤

Eli Martin is well-known and well-liked. He’s accustomed to taking care of people—his three children, the residents of Birch County as elected Sheriff, and anyone else who may need a helping hand. Regardless of his good looks and stunning personality, his high-profile position means the widower can’t go trolling for a night of sex. What neither Eli or Zoe expect is to meet one another—although their jobs provided opportunities for corresponding and phone-flirting for nearly a decade, they’ve never met in person. Will Madame Eve’s magic do its trick or will Zoe’s insecurities and a bullet end it all before they realize they’re known and wanted…and in love

Braving the Deep End –

Dear Madame Eve,

My name is Mike. I’m twenty-four years old, and I’m straight.

Well, I used to think so anyway.

Since I’m not the sort of guy who posts a random “needs advice” question on Reddit, I’m seeking your professional dating advice.

Life advice, actually.

There’s this girl—isn’t that how all stories start? LOL

Ryleigh’s been one of my best friends since high school. A couple of months ago, we both found ourselves single, and I was depressed after witnessing something unspeakable. After talking late into the night over too many beers, we hooked up. It became a regular thing for a short while, but I ended it for various reasons.

First, I think we’re better off as friends.

Second, she was getting serious, and I don’t want a relationship with her.

I’ll get to the third and biggest reason in a moment.

When I told her sex had been a mistake, she didn’t take it well. We haven’t spoken since, and I fear our friendship is finished. I still don’t know how to process it.

Now for the real reason I cut off things with Ryleigh.

There’s also this guy—and that’s not the way my stories usually start.

The first time I saw him, he was swimming laps at my gym. The gym isn’t a pickup place for me. I work out, and I leave. However, I couldn’t help but notice this guy. I’ve been an avid swimmer most of my life, and I know a natural when I see one. He was effortless in the water.

Then he got out of the pool.

Suddenly, I was watching one of those high-end perfume commercials where the guy gets out of the Mediterranean and every drop of water travels the contours of his muscles in slow-mo.

Something happened to me—and no, I didn’t sprout a boner in the pool area. But the whole world seemed to freeze, and I couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think. I stared at him, though gaped is probably a more accurate description. My heart pounded so loud, I swore he would hear it. I was literally thunderstruck.

It was the purest, most intensely clear moment of my life.

I’ve heard about moments like that, read about them in books, but I’d never experienced one.

After he left the pool area, I swam about hundred laps in a failed attempt to forget the way he made my blood sing but only ended up being late to work.

Oh yeah, I’m a state trooper. I spend every day surrounded by law enforcement. Men’s men, if you will. Can you imagine how unwelcome these thoughts are while living in a world drenched in testosterone and inflated masculinity?

I didn’t want to think about another man sexually.

Yet, the next day, I found myself arriving earlier at the gym, hoping to see him before he got into the pool. Maybe walk in together, hear his voice, or learn his name.

It’s Beau, by the way.

And yes, when he told me, I grinned like a fool and said, “Cool name,” even as I thought, what a cool guy. I didn’t even know him yet! How lame is that?

Turns out, Beau gets to the gym ten minutes before it opens, and he’s always the first customer in the door. Guess who’s now the second?

I didn’t spy on him in the locker room, but I wanted to. Damn it all, I really wanted to. But he’s a big guy—much bigger than me—so I had to show some discretion. I did delay putting on my suit in order to walk to the pool at the same time though. When we met in the doorway, he’d flashed me a smile that made my stomach actually flutter, which has never happened before.

“We keep meeting like this,” he said with a sweet Southern twang.

I melted. I think he was flirting with me.

Anyway, we chatted about swimming. We both were on the swim team in high school and he swam competitively in college. Now we swim to stay in shape. Then we each took a lane in the pool. I wanted to time my laps to end with his, but it would’ve been too obvious, and I didn’t want to be late for work again. After my swim, I watched his beautiful form cut through the water, hoping he would notice I’d finished, maybe turn and smile at me again. He didn’t, of course, too intent on his perfect breast stroke.

I’ve seen him almost every day since. We’ve taken to racing each other in the pool. He’s a far better swimmer, but I’ve bested him a few times. I think we’re flirting. He touches my arm when he talks to me, leans close when I’m telling him something. When I mentioned the tattoo sleeving his arm—a forest scene of rich green that complements his hazel eyes—he let me get close and admire the details. He smells magnificent. Once, I was brave enough to quickly squeeze his biceps and say, “These can’t all be from swimming.” He laughed and playfully jabbed me in the stomach.

It felt amazing.

He’s never said if he’s gay or not, but I think he likes me. Maybe he’s waiting for me to make the first move. Maybe his friendliness is just Southern charm, and I’m reading into it all.

Our friendship progressed from chitchat to getting a drink at the juice bar after a swim. Then we swapped numbers, and now we’re texting. Nothing serious, just casual texts about TV shows we like. A few weeks ago, we started going out for breakfast.

Are these dates?

I have no idea.

I like Beau. A lot. He’s cool, and he’s fun. Seeing him or talking to him is the highlight of my day. We never run out of things to talk about. No awkward silences. But am I capable of being more than a friend?

Could I kiss another man?

Honestly, the thought of kissing him terrifies me to my core because what if I liked it? Would that mean I’m gay? Bisexual? Maybe sexuality is fluid and it’s just Beau who makes me feel this way.

I want to pursue my attraction to him, but then I remember how sex ruined a lifelong friendship with Ryleigh. His friendship has become very important to me, and I don’t want to mess it up. I mean, what if he kisses me and I don’t like it? I couldn’t live with myself if I hurt him in any way.

I don’t want to live with regrets. I want to be the kind of man who goes after what I want.

Yet, I can’t just allow Beau to be a sexual experiment.

He’s thirteen years older than me—which isn’t a big deal—but I assume he’s much more experienced in the bedroom than I am.

What if I’m a disappointment to him? Worse, what if I freak out when things get physical and change my mind? Or regret it all in the morning? What if I’m so awkward and inexperienced he laughs at me?

We’re both rather competitive men, and I don’t think I could face him ever again if any of those things happened.

I need to test the waters. First, to see if I’m even physically able to be intimate with a man—it’s one thing to imagine but another to act on it. And second, I’d like to know what I’m doing so I don’t embarrass myself. What if I’m no good at it?

I can’t use hookup apps or go to local gay bars because everyone knows my family in this town, which is much smaller than it appears. After all, what if this attraction is a phase and doesn’t stick? If I change my mind, I won’t be able to stop rumors, and that could make my life at work a living hell. And for what? One night of sexual experimentation?

Madame Eve, would you please set me up with a nice guy to help me? Let him read this letter so he understands I don’t want strings, and I don’t want anyone to get hurt. I just need to figure out who I am and what I want. If this works, then maybe things with Beau could develop into something more. I can’t risk losing his friendship to find out.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely,
Mike Martin
Known & Wanted – Unaccustomed to sitting at bar, Eli filled his time waiting for his date by contemplating is bizarre adventure gifted to him and, as the norm in his profession, making a study of those around him.

A woman in a corner booth caught his eye. She chatted on the phone, laughing with someone. Probably the man she came here to meet. He kept a covert eye on her, if only for his own curiosity and entertainment.

Her pixie-ish, hair style seemed to ooze melted dark chocolate, swirled with caramel and cherry. Even in the somewhat dim light of the bar, he could tell she wore little makeup. She doesn’t need it.

His training and experience taught him to observe everything, including little nuances which told him, despite her outward happiness, uncertainty and nerves had her on edge.

He looked into his beer, the mental self-flagellation he thought he’d tamped down and dismissed, winked at him from the remaining yeasty foam.

This arrangement seemed perfect for his circumstance, private, consensual, anonymous. He couldn’t go out on a Saturday night for a ‘hook up’ for a myriad of reasons. Due to the nature of his position, on-call meant 24/7/365 and his constituents frowned on drunken, carousing county leadership. And being an elected and sworn officer of the State, he honored the trust Birch County residents had given him and his oath to them and the State of Ohio. And, like his kids said, ‘Everyone knows you, Dad.’

“Excuse me.”

You’re slacking, Martin. You never saw her coming. The woman from the corner booth stood next to him at the bar.

“Sheriff Martin? What a surprise.”

“I’m sorry….” Don’t know who you are, but wouldn’t mind getting to know you.

“No, really, I’m sorry,” she chuckled.

What an adorable laugh.

“We talk on the on the phone all the time, but have never really met.” She put out her hand, “Zoe—Zoe Zimmerman from Channel 8.”

Wow, I had no idea you’d be quite this cute. He rose from his seat. “Zoe, well, what a pleasure.” He shook her hand, taking in her impish smile and bright green eyes. “Have a seat. After all these years, let me buy you the beer we always talked about.”

He’d been phone pals with this local television station—What the hell does she do there, anyway? —producer, reporter, assignment manager, jack-of-all-media-trades for more years than he could remember. Always pleasant, with a constant exuberance in her voice, he welcomed calls from her. Although information she needed, or he needed disseminated eventually got traded, more often than not their playful banter many times was laced with friendly, subtle sexual undertone.

“I’m sorry,” Zoe said. “I’m actually waiting for someone.” A chime sounded from the pocket of her fitted, navy blue blazer. “Oh, excuse me.” She turned a bit away from him, checking her cell.

At the same time, Eli’s phone rumbled on the bar top. He took a sip of beer and touched the screen. Your date, the text read. Eli glanced about the bar, curious if someone spied on him, or if this ethereal Madame Eve had covert operatives stationed in the bar.

But when a second text came with an attached photo of the woman standing next to him, a grin lit his face and he mentally high-fived his great fortune.

When he turned to take a peek at his now-date, Zoe’s big green eyes were wide with shock.

She fumbled for words. “There must be some mistake.”
