Synopsis:

Mila Flores and her best friend Riley have always been inseparable. There’s not much excitement in their small town of Cross Creek, so Mila and Riley make their own fun, devoting most of their time to Riley’s favorite activity: amateur witchcraft.

So when Riley and two Fairmont Academy mean girls die under suspicious circumstances, Mila refuses to believe everyone’s explanation that her BFF was involved in a suicide pact. Instead, armed with a tube of lip gloss and an ancient grimoire, Mila does the unthinkable to uncover the truth: she brings the girls back to life.

Unfortunately, Riley, June, and Dayton have no recollection of their murders, but they do have unfinished business to attend to. Now, with only seven days until the spell wears off and the girls return to their graves, Mila must wrangle the distracted group of undead teens and work fast to discover their murderer…before the killer strikes again.

๐Ÿ“My Review๐Ÿ“:

Interesting story but it did not have enough to capture me.

Undead Girl Gang is more about friendship than anything else. Mila brings back three girls from the dead, one being her best friend and two being girls she hates, in order to solve the mystery surrounding their deaths. The premise was cool but the execution was not the best. The story fell a bit flat for me and I feel like there were many questions left unanswered. I was able to guess the big mystery of the book pretty early on. On top of that I did not find the characters all that appealing.

I really did not like Mila. She was funny at times but her attitude really infuriated me. To me it really seemed like she was pretending to be someone that she wasn’t. Riley was disappointing, I thought she would be a fun character but she was bitter and moody the whole novel. I get that she’s dead and has a right to feel that way but it was a total buzzkill since Mila described her as being so full of life all the time. June and Dayton were okay, they had a lot of character development and that was great but it didn’t make me love their characters. Xander was also just okay, I liked him but he was always just described as being super hot so there was really nothing to dislike.

I was expecting more from this book I’m not going to lie. It was a highly anticipated read of mine but it fell short. I assume this is a standalone but I wouldn’t mind reading another book about Mila and the town of Cross Creak. I want to see how Mila moves forward from everything that happened at the ending. The one thing I really loved about this book was how it focused on the friendship between the girls more than anything else. They went from adversaries to friends for “life.” Their friendship was beautiful and I am glad that they were able to come together in the end.

Synopsis:

Welcome to the cursed town of Sparrowโ€ฆ

Where, two centuries ago, three sisters were sentenced to death for witchery. Stones were tied to their ankles and they were drowned in the deep waters surrounding the town.

Now, for a brief time each summer, the sisters return, stealing the bodies of three weak-hearted girls so that they may seek their revenge, luring boys into the harbor and pulling them under.

Like many locals, seventeen-year-old Penny Talbot has accepted the fate of the town. But this year, on the eve of the sistersโ€™ return, a boy named Bo Carter arrives; unaware of the danger he has just stumbled into.

Mistrust and lies spread quickly through the salty, rain-soaked streets. The townspeople turn against one another. Penny and Bo suspect each other of hiding secrets. And death comes swiftly to those who cannot resist the call of the sisters.

But only Penny sees what others cannot. And she will be forced to choose: save Bo, or save herself.

๐Ÿ“My Review๐Ÿ“:

This book was way darker than I expected but I was so here for it.

The Wicked Deep genuinely impressed me and I am very pleased with this novel. Shea Ernshaw’s writing is beautiful and easy to follow while the story she crafted was absolutely incredible. This novel was beautiful, haunting, spooky, dark, mysterious and much more. The Swan Sisters were accused of witchcraft and sentenced to death, but when you learn their actual story and the true reasoning behind their execution it becomes hard to hate the sisters. It is easy to understand why they came back every summer for 200 years to take revenge on the people who wronged them. I found myself rooting for them at times. I can’t say much about the way this story was told due to spoilers but I will say that it was written extremely well. The big plot twists were not that hard to guess but Ernshaw had my second guessing myself the entire time.

Penny is an interesting character. Always seeming like she knew way more than she said she did. She was a good character and I liked her well enough. She did not have much personality but I feel like the reason behind that is a spoiler so I can’t comment on it too much. All I will say is that her behavior was appropriate to her situation. Now we have Bo, oh boy this guy was boring. He really did nothing for me. He was nice enough but super cryptic and shady at times. His impulsivity could really get annoying and he also just seemed very dull. Bo’s character could have been expanded upon a little more.

I didn’t give this book 5 stars because I didn’t love it. Sure I really enjoyed the story but I don’t have any special feelings about it. It was a great story but it did have it’s dull moments. Also one thing I really did not like about the story was that the romance was too insta-love. The characters know each other for maybe 2 or 3 weeks. I hate insta-love so that aspect ruined it a little for me but it’s alright, I still really liked the story. Overall this is an enjoyable tale and I would recommend it as a good spooky Halloween read, especially if you are a fan of Hocus Pocus or The Raven Boys. If I had to describe this book I would say it’s Hocus Pocus meets The Raven Boys.
