📝My Review📝:

This book was a wild ride and for the first time I actually did not guess the killer!

Escaping From Houdini was such a fun installment to the Stalking Jack The Ripper series. While it was a little slow compared to the previous two it was still fun nonetheless. I loved the addition of the Moonlight Carnival and Mephistophelis totally has my heart I fell for him hard. And due to that I am once again over Thomas and his extra ass. The murders were very interesting due to their connection to tarot and cartomancy. It was also funny seeing Harry Houdini as a character.

Audrey Rose as always was her slightly frustrating self. Her decisions in this book were very questionable. She is supposed to be very smart but it always seems like she is oblivious to the obvious. But she has been that way since the first book so I wasn’t expecting much from her. Not going to lie I was really hoping she would drop Thomas and choose Mephisto but the Cressworth ship unfortunately doesn’t seem like it will sink (pun intended). Thomas was not in this book much and I am sure that is what led to my lack of enjoyment for his character. He is supposed to be able to deduce anything but he couldn’t tell when Audrey Rose was pulling one over on him? She is literally the worst liar in the world she has not one aloof bone in her body. Thomas might win me back in the last book but at this point I am too dedicated to Mephisto. SPEAKING OF…my boy. Literally loved him, every single thing about him. Even though I was suspecting him 90% of the book of being the murderer that changed nothing. I really hope we get to see him again in the last book because his character was too good to just be a one-off. I loved that Liza was back in this book. I missed her and Audrey Rose desperately needed her female partner in crime. She is so intelligent and observant that I wish she would join the Uncle/Thomas/Audrey Rose squad. I hope she is more present in the last book too.

This wasn’t the best installment in the series. It was pretty predictable and followed a pattern that was easy to figure out. There really wasn’t much suspense and anticipation for me. While there were many positive things about this book it just was not a 5 star. Hunting Prince Dracula, this book’s predecessor, was so amazing it is going to be hard to beat.

Overall I really liked this book and this series remains one that I enjoy very much. I definitely recommend this series, don’t be turned off by historical fiction! I cannot wait for the final installment in the series, Capturing The Devil.

Pre-Order ~ Release Blitz: Two Scandals Are Better Than One By Nancy Yeager, #HistoricalRomance

Title: Two Scandals Are Better Than One
Series: Harrow’s Finest Five
Author: Nancy Yeager
Genre: Historical Romance
Release Date: May 30, 2019

A foray into London’s seedy underworld will unmask their hidden desires.

A gentleman on an illicit lark
Edward, the upstanding Viscount Meriden, is desperate for one reckless adventure. After years of holding his crumbling family together, he finally has the chance at one night of abandon at a debauched house party, where he meets a masked mystery woman. He longs to uncover all her secrets. But when he realizes she’s an old friend on a dangerous mission, he insists on becoming her protector.
A lady on a dangerous quest
Miss Lucinda Wagner is the only woman in a family of men rumored to be spies. When her father goes missing, she infiltrates a treacherous world to find him. No one suspects her double life until her childhood friend Edward discovers her secret. Now “Steady Eddie” insists upon watching over her. To gain his silence, she allows him join her search.
A journey into the belly of the beast
As Luci and Edward delve deeper into the criminal underworld, their lives turn upside down. Danger lurks around every corner. Threats assail them from all sides, and the only safe harbor in the city is in each other’s arms. Until the sparks between them threaten to ignite their long-denied passion.

Luci steeled her spine in preparation for Lord Edward’s questions. What are you doing here, Miss Wagner? Why are you wearing that mask? Where is your father? Do you know what my sister will do when she finds out I met you at a den of iniquities and didn’t immediately drag you out of it?
But he wasn’t asking anything. He wasn’t speaking at all. He was staring at her again, as he had when they had spotted each other across the room, like he had when he had sat down beside her. He had the look of a man who had just woken from the most pleasant dream, but was still half in it. And for the life of her, she swore he hadn’t recognized her, that he still didn’t recognize her.

He slowly looked her up and down, his gaze lingering over every exposed inch of skin—and there were more than were decent—and every curve exhibited by her expertly fitted costume. “Do you have any idea how beautiful you are?” His look was feral and possessive, but his voice was silky smooth and calming.

She had known this man since she had been five and he had been Emme’s protective ten-year-old brother. When she was twelve, she had said more prayers than she would care to admit that her best friend’s seventeen-year-old brother would be moved to kiss her, which he never had. She had rolled her eyes when she was seventeen and learned he had taken a lovely but boring young widow as his mistress. But in fifteen years of knowing him, he had never sent such a shock of awareness through her body.

The man looking at her right now, the man who had come to this depraved party for a purpose she couldn’t fathom, had no thought for protection or integrity or discretion. The man ravishing her with his gaze believed she was a stranger.

“I’m sorry for what that horrible man said to you. And I have no expectation…” He shook his head. “That’s not true. Perhaps I did have an expectation, or at least a hope.”

He stepped close to her and slowly lifted his hand toward her face, stopping just inches from touching her. Luci didn’t know whether her heart pounded most from the worry he might pull off her mask, the hope he might kiss her, or the fear he wouldn’t.

“I won’t touch you if you don’t wish it.”

She shouldn’t be in this house. It had been foolish to come looking for the leader of the Elephant and Castle gang, as her father would tell her if they were here. But he wasn’t. Her father’s disappearance was at the root of all of this.

But Edward had kept her safe. Whomever he was trying to be right now, whatever role he was playing, Steady Eddie was still at the center of this man. He was a good man. A fierce protector. And whether it was fear, adrenaline, or sheer attraction, she desperately wanted him to kiss her.

“The lady gives her permission for a kiss. Just a kiss.”

Nancy spent her early years longing to be an English countryside vet thanks to James Herriot’s All Creatures Great and Small series, and an adventurist archaeologist like George Lucas’s Indiana Jones character. After studying veterinary pre-med and earning an anthropology degree, she realized her true passion is story in all its forms.

When Nancy’s not writing, reading, or binge-watching story, she’s often pursuing a physical challenge like studying Krav Maga or aspiring to achieve the perfect crow pose. She also spends her time drinking too much coffee, not enough red wine, and just the right amount of Bourbon. She lives in Maryland with her fabulous family, which includes some very spoiled rescue cats.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved this book! And guess what? Another new author to love. If you’ve been reading my latest reviews, then you know I’ve been enjoying all new-to-me authors.

If I had one complaint with this book, it is that is ended too soon. I actually haven’t read a historical-western romance in ages. After I read the blurb for this one, I knew I wanted to read it. Do you know what really amazed me? For such a short story, the author packed it with everything you’d find in a full length novel. Her characters were truly developed well. I personally felt like I knew them, and connected to them. Not only the H/h but all the secondary characters as well. There was enough angst and drama to entertain me. In addition, the characters has wit and sass and I was smiling throughout like a goon. And of course there is an amazing HEA! I’ll say it agin, I really enjoyed this book. And I am excited to read more from this author.

The synopsis does a pretty good job of giving you insight to where this story is going so I will not add anything more because I would hate to spoil this fun book. I will add though that because Gage has two older brothers, I’ll be stalking this author to make sure I don’t miss any mentions of them having their own books. 😉

This is my honest and unbiased review. Thank you for taking the time to read it. 🙂

Excerpt:

“You are hurt, worse than you want to say,” Rebecca Warner whispered.
Her soft green eyes were filled with real concern, something Adam had never expected to see on her face. “Well, that is disappointing.”
“Disappointing?” Rebecca immediately began searching through his hair for the wound, and he chose to imagine it a sensual caress until she spoke again. “You have a gash to your head that has bled. Dear God, you could have died.”
“Always looking on the bright side,” he murmured, and then noticed how close the lady was to his body. He inhaled slowly, delighted in this unexpectedly rare treat. Mrs. Warner had never been the friendliest sort. “You smell nice.”
“Really, Rafferty,” she chided. She suddenly slipped her hand inside his coat, rummaged in his pockets and began to dab at his head with the handkerchief she found there. “This is hardly the time to worry about my perfume.”
“As you say, I could have been killed. Seems like an appropriate time for noticing the little things in life that please me.” He felt pain and hissed. Eager for a distraction, he dropped his gaze to her shoulder—now bare of the shawl, which had fallen away unnoticed by the lady. The respectable garment Rebecca had worn to church, so stylish and modest, was less so now thanks to the accident. The struggle out of the carriage seemed to have ripped the seam apart, and her pale skin looked very soft and inviting. He curled his fingers into the skirt of her gown and held it. “Lovely.”
She drew back to peer into his eyes again, and then she glanced down at his fist. “What are you doing?”
What was he doing? Adam had no idea, but he wasn’t of a mind to stop.

Synopsis: Kamzin has always dreamed of becoming one of the Emperor’s royal explorers, the elite climbers tasked with mapping the wintry, mountainous Empire and spying on its enemies. She knows she could be the best in the world, if only someone would give her a chance.

But everything changes when the mysterious and eccentric River Shara, the greatest explorer ever known, arrives in her village and demands to hire Kamzin—not her older sister Lusha, as everyone had expected—for his next expedition. This is Kamzin’s chance to prove herself—even though River’s mission to retrieve a rare talisman for the emperor means climbing Raksha, the tallest and deadliest mountain in the Aryas. Then Lusha sets off on her own mission to Raksha with a rival explorer who is determined to best River, and Kamzin must decide what’s most important to her: protecting her sister from the countless perils of the climb or beating her to the summit.

The challenges of climbing Raksha are unlike anything Kamzin expected—or prepared for—with avalanches, ice chasms, ghosts, and even worse at every turn. And as dark secrets are revealed, Kamzin must unravel the truth of their mission and of her companions—while surviving the deadliest climb she has ever faced.

Synopsis: One thousand years ago, the great Kami Dragon was summoned to grant a single terrible wish—and the land of Iwagoto was plunged into an age of darkness and chaos.

Now, for whoever holds the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers, a new wish will be granted. A new age is about to dawn.

Raised by monks in the isolated Silent Winds temple, Yumeko has trained all her life to hide her yokai nature. 📝My Review📝:

I did not expect to love this book as much as I did!

Audrey Rose and Thomas are back at it again in this exciting second installment in the Stalking Jack the Ripper series. Where the first book read more like a true crime story, this one felt more like fiction. Hunting Prince Dracula was very rooted in folklore and mythology which made it more exciting to me. The writing was significantly better, there was much less repetition, and Audrey Rose was not as annoying as she was in the first book. Another thing that I really liked about this book was that it was barely predictable at all. Unlike the first one (where I guessed the killer right away) I wasn’t able to accurately guess the events of the book. I loved all the surprises and plot twists.

Thomas Cresswell really is the most extra, ridiculous, and outrageous man I have ever read about but damn do I love him. This book really made me fall for him. And then all the stuff we found out about him in this book…mind blown. I feel like he really came into his own in this book. In the last one he felt like an imitation of Will Herondale but in this book he felt like his own character. I also loved meeting his sister Daciana, she is just as crazy as he is.

The only thing that really bothered me about this book was the constant attack on Audrey Rose’s gender. She was constantly under scrutiny because she was a woman who wanted to study medicine. It was extremely annoying and as a woman myself it angered me. BUT this is historical fiction, that’s how things were back then so I’m not going to dock a star because the author was accurate to history. Audrey Rose also does a great job of sticking people in their place and defending her rights as a woman.

I really loved this book and I can’t wait to read the next one. Seeing Audrey Rose and Thomas in America is sure to be a fun adventure.

📝My Review📝:

What a satisfying conclusion.

I absolutely adore this story and the world that S. Jae-Jones has built in these two books. I feel as though these two books are some that I will always come back to. They are timeless and magical. That being said, I enjoyed Wintersong much more than I did Shadowsong for a variety of reasons.

Firstly, this book was very confusing at times. There were moments when I would shout, “THIS MAKES NO ******* SENSE.” And sadly I am still confused about some things. Second, there were a lot of unanswered questions. We still really don’t know why or how the Goblin King became the Goblin King. His past is still very much a mystery. We also still don’t know how he came to find Liesl in the first place. Also a lot of stuff about Liesl’s family history was hinted at but never explained. Thirdly, I was able to guess the ending and most of the twists at least halfway through the book. The air of mystery and surprise was lacking. Finally, there was a severe lack of the Goblin King in this book. He was barely in it, he appeared at most maybe ten times. Due to his absence there was also a lack of romance in the book. The reason I could not give this book 5 stars is because I felt like there was something missing from it, and that something was the Goblin King. He was such an amazing character in the first book and it is really sad that he took a backseat in this one.

All in all I did really enjoy this book and it is one that I will be thinking about for a long time. Especially because I FINALLY know what the Goblin King’s name is.
