Sometimes the choices we make can be colder than ice…

When cursed vampire, Princess Odesha, is captured, she fears she won’t be able to keep the promise she made her father. Each step she takes across the barren wasteland of snow, is a step farther away from helping the people in the kingdom. In a race against time, she must figure out how to escape the mountain and fulfill her destiny, before the ice takes over her heart completely. But her heart is torn…between the promise she made and a tribe of people whose lead hunter makes her want to bite and never let go.
As the dark presence crosses the ice bringing war, Odesha must choose between saving her frozen heart…or the kingdom she promised to protect.

Secrets of the tribe wait to be discovered…

Mysterious Kunchok is the fearless leader of the hidden tribe on the ice. Tasked with providing food from a dwindling source in a winter like they’ve never seen, he finds a pale woman running through the dangerous forest. There is something different about her, something that makes his heart beat harder than an orik raid. Instincts kick in and he’s overwhelmed with the need to keep her safe. To find out her purpose, he brings her to his tribe only to discover that she doesn’t speak his language.
With both of their worlds threatened, Kunchok must decide whether to save his princess…or his tribe on the brink of starvation.

Synopsis:

One thousand years ago, a wish was made to the Harbinger of Change and a sword of rage and lightning was forged. Kamigoroshi. The Godslayer. It had one task: to seal away the powerful demon Hakaimono.

Now he has broken free.

Kitsune shapeshifter Yumeko has one task: to take her piece of the ancient and powerful scroll to the Steel Feather temple in order to prevent the summoning of the Harbinger of Change, the great Kami Dragon who will grant one wish to whomever holds the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers. But she has a new enemy now. The demon Hakaimono, who for centuries was trapped in a cursed sword, has escaped and possessed the boy she thought would protect her, Kage Tatsumi of the Shadow Clan.

Hakaimono has done the unthinkable and joined forces with the Master of Demons in order to break the curse of the sword and set himself free. To overthrow the empire and cover the land in darkness, they need one thing: the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers. As the paths of Yumeko and the possessed Tatsumi cross once again, the entire empire will be thrown into chaos.

📝My Review📝:

I received this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

4.5 Stars

In this exciting sequel to Soul of the Sword we see Yumeko and the squad continue their journey to the Steel Feather Temple but on top of trying to keep the scroll safe there is the added challenge of Tatsumi now being possessed by the demon Hakaimono. While Hakaimono is off causing lots of chaos Yumeko has made it her goal to save Tatsumi from the demon possessing him on top of getting the scroll to the Steel Feather Temple. But this journey is not easy and the squad (Okame, Reika, Master Jiro, and Daisuke) hit many roadblocks along the way. It is an exciting and thrilling story that is nothing short of enjoyable. If you loved the first book then you will love this one as well.

Now why is this not a 5 star read if I enjoyed it so much? Here are my critiques. This was a similar issue with the first book but the story is very slow moving. There is one goal in mind and it takes the entire book to get there. Now this is not a huge issue but I just wish there was more. I want more from this story. Secondly there was many predictable moments. While some things did come as a shock to me there was a lot that did not as well. Predictability is not bad but it makes the story a little less enjoyable. Lastly Tatsumi was not in this book that much and I missed him…that is a personal thing but these are my reasons why this book is a 4.5.

Let’s talk about character development. There was a lot and I am thrilled about it. Yumeko grew so much! One of my complaints about the first book was that she was too innocent. Well not anymore my friends Yumeko really explores her kitsune side in this book and uses her powers a lot more. She also grows as a person. She was very oblivious to the world in the first book but she becomes a lot more aware in this one. She starts to understand feelings as well (not just romantic feelings) and I think that was so important to her character development. Reika really took charge in this book, I really saw her as the leader of our little squad and not a force to be trifled with. Daisuke and Okame! My precious boys I love them. They also develop a lot in this book but I won’t say how. I think it is better left unknown before going into the book. What I will say is that Okame is not the only humorous character anymore. Lastly Tatsumi/Hakaimono, well Hakaimono is a demon so he does pretty shady things. Like I mentioned we don’t see Tatsumi much since he is possessed but the dynamic and development of these two characters is very important. You’ll see what I mean when you read it.

I was dying to read this book and I was not disappointed. This series is really one of my favorites and I am so excited to see how it is going to end. It is so unique and different from much of what is out there nowadays and I want more! Everytime I finish one of these books I miss the story and characters and want to reread it immediately. Not many books can do that.

📝My Review📝:

4.5 Stars

Tricia Levenseller has officially become one of my favorite authors. I loved the Daughter of The Pirate King duology but I was not sure if I would like this viking stand alone novel. But oh boy did I. Warrior of the Wild is about a female warrior named Rasmira who is sabotaged and fails her warrior trial. Due to her failure she is banished and is not to return unless she can complete her given task: kill the god that has been plaguing the villages for years. So she sets off into the wild and finds some unlikely allies along the way.

This book was exciting from beginning to end. The action scenes never stopped. Rasmira was always fighting for her life and she was pretty damn good at doing it. The plot was not predictable. It was so unique that I could not really guess what was going to happen. It is incredibly hard to create a unique fantasy world nowadays but Tricia Levenseller was able to do that for three books now. She has definitely become an auto buy author because of that. The writing was great and the characterization was mostly perfect.

Rasmira was by far my favorite character and that rarely happens. The female leads in books tend to be lacking characters for me (only because I want so much from them) but Rasmira (and Alosa from DotPK) was everything I wanted and more. Everything that happened to her, all her thoughts, and all her actions made perfect sense. She never did anything out of character. She was definitely the strongest character physically and mentally in the book. She never let herself get distracted from her goal of returning home and regaining her honor. Everything that came out of her mouth was golden, she really knew how to handle herself and the other characters.

Iric was my second favorite character. His sass kept me laughing the entire book. Besides his sense of humor he was also smart and extremely skilled. He became a good friend and confidant to Rasmira because he was so easy to talk to. He never judged, even though they didn’t hold the same views of the world, he always listened to Rasmira and her likewise.

Soren was a pretty weak character which is odd considering that he was the male lead. We were told he was a strong warrior but we never saw it. Rasmira saved his butt at least a hundred times. He was also very pushy and forward with Rasmira. She clearly was not into him for a good majority of the book but he never really stopped with the flirtatious comments. I truly feel like he instantly liked Rasmira because she was the first girl he had seen in a year and she was a powerful warrior. It felt a little too much like insta-love from his side. He would follow Rasmira around after she repeatedly told him to stop so I don’t know how to feel about that. He was just not up to par with Rasmira and I feel like she deserved someone better. We also do not know much about him besides the fact that he was orphaned as a young child. We don’t know much about his personality or interests. Due to all of this he just fell very flat. Iric was a more developed character than he was and Iric was only the second male lead.

I really enjoyed this book but it just did not have that 5 star factor for me. It comes close but no cigar unfortunately. I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for something fresh to read. Fantasy can get repetitive but I promise you that this one is something new. I also recommend this to fans of Sky In The Deep by Adrienne Young. One last thing I want to mention was that this book has LGBTQ+ rep. I can’t speak on how good it was due to my own sexual orientation but I want to make people aware that it is there so if those in the community decide to read this book they can be the judges of that. All in all this was such an enjoyable read with unforgettable characters.

EXCERPT:

“I love belts.” He winked, and she trembled all the harder when he knelt down behind her. The cuffs clinked together as he selected which end to use first. “Implements of correction that one can wear, always at the ready.”

“What exactly do you think I should be corrected for?” He pretended to think about it. “How about all the times you drove me to absolute distraction?”

She was so astonished by that lack of reasoning, she almost didn’t notice he had fastened the first cuff around her unresisting ankle, and then buckled that around the right table leg. “I drove you? You’re the one who won’t stop walking around the ship naked!”

“Yes, but who ignores it? Do you have any idea how cold this ship is when you’re wet? Your first dozen strokes ought to be for shrinkage alone. And all those times you called me ‘asshat’?” He shifted to her other side, opening the cuff to buckle down her left ankle. “Granted, I didn’t know what that meant until now, but still…” He circled to the head of the table and leaned down beside her. Hands clasped, weight braced on his elbows, he shook his head. “Poor innocent, little human. Don’t worry. I am going to make this such an education for you.” Ruffling her hair, he stood again.

“You idiot!” she huffed, whipping her hair back out of her eyes. “It’s a curse, not a suggestion. And like hell I’m going to stand here and be taught anything by the likes of y-ah!” She lurched in her bonds, every inch of her straining to escape the lash of pure fire that wrapped her ass, hugging it in the grip of all that supple leather before letting go.

“Is it?” Kogan asked, shifting that deceptively soft strap to his other hand. “Is it really?”

The sting was incredible and yet, when he let his free hand wander a brushing caress across the welt he’d just created, her eyes damn near closed in erotic delight.

Ryker’s strong
hand cups my chin, turning my face to his, smothering my lips with a fierce
sexual tension I wasn’t prepared for. His tongue invades my mouth with
delicious need, his kiss the essence of fire burning ice. I melt beneath the
dominance, succumbing to the passionate force of his lips moving over mine.
When he pulls back, I’m caught in a haze, my body screaming for more. We’re
silent in the darkness. Eyes lingering on me, his black irises study me in the
bit of light cast from the stage. I feel captured in them as if I’m drowning in
dark water, unable to see the surface, and my only choice is to sink and
welcome what awaits me. Thunderous drums pronounce the woman’s orgasm, and my
attention returns to the stage, my entire body humming with sexual desire. Through
another act, the men fight, and by the fifth act, and the plot’s thirteenth
night, both men lay with the woman. My cheeks flush red, my entire body alert,
my nipples pert, and my pussy soaked with arousal. I watch, entranced as the
three of them act out their lovemaking, each man taking her on either side.
Biting into my lip, I fist my hands in my lap as a breath escapes my parted
mouth. Glancing over at Ryker, his gaze is more than his usual intensity. I see
the heat in his own cheeks, the sexual tension raging just below the surface.
He licks his lips in a way that’s all too inviting, and I imagine myself moving
into his arms and him kicking everyone out, so he can take me on the table.

Synopsis:

Project Runway meets Mulan in this sweeping YA fantasy about a young girl who poses as a boy to compete for the role of imperial tailor and embarks on an impossible journey to sew three magic dresses, from the sun, the moon, and the stars.

Maia Tamarin dreams of becoming the greatest tailor in the land, but as a girl, the best she can hope for is to marry well. When a royal messenger summons her ailing father, once a tailor of renown, to court, Maia poses as a boy and takes his place. She knows her life is forfeit if her secret is discovered, but she’ll take that risk to achieve her dream and save her family from ruin. There’s just one catch: Maia is one of twelve tailors vying for the job.

Backstabbing and lies run rampant as the tailors compete in challenges to prove their artistry and skill. Maia’s task is further complicated when she draws the attention of the court magician, Edan, whose piercing eyes seem to see straight through her disguise.

And nothing could have prepared her for the final challenge: to sew three magic gowns for the emperor’s reluctant bride-to-be, from the laughter of the sun, the tears of the moon, and the blood of stars. With this impossible task before her, she embarks on a journey to the far reaches of the kingdom, seeking the sun, the moon, and the stars, and finding more than she ever could have imagined.

Steeped in Chinese culture, sizzling with forbidden romance, and shimmering with magic, this young adult fantasy is pitch-perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas or Renée Ahdieh.

📝My Review📝

I received an arc of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

I loved this book. It was fresh, original, unique, and nostalgic of other tales. Spin the Dawn is the amazing story of Maia Tamarin and how she fights to become the Imperial Tailor and the amazing journey she goes on to create the dresses of legend. The plot was constantly intriguing, I never wanted to put the book down. This book is a Mulan inspired retelling but other than the fact that Maia has to disguise herself as a boy the similarities stop there. Spin the Dawn was its own original tale but like I mentioned some aspects of it reminded me of other stories. The plot was consistently moving, it was a nonstop battle to the finish. My only critique is that I think the romance leaned towards insta-love and that is not my favorite trope at all.

I really loved the characters. Maia is a wonderful female protagonist. She consistently worked hard no matter how many people undermined or teased her. Her talent as a seamstress knows no bounds. I think she got in her head a lot of the time but she was always strong enough to pull off the tasks required of her without Edan’s help. Now let’s talk about Edan! His character archetype is what I like to call the “Nikolai Archetype,” meaning that his character personality and actions are similar to that of Nikolai from the Grisha trilogy. These characteristics include sarcastic, snarky, never takes anything seriously, fun, sly, secretive, very attractive, has some type of eliteness to them, mischievous, evasive of questions, usually lonely, and lastly has a 99.9% chance of being my favorite character in the book. Another character like this who Edan reminds me of in River Shara from Even The Darkest Stars. He was a wonderful character and as the Lord Enchanter there was no shortage of antics from him. He loved to tease Maia but also supported her along the way. Lady Sarnai is the character I am most interested in. I think she has a big role to play and I want to learn more about it. She acts cold and vicious but it is obvious to see that she is just a girl upset over being given to the emperor as a way to barter peace. More is going to come out of that storyline and I cannot wait to learn more about it. Emperor Khanujin is interesting and I can’t really figure him out. He seems calm and peaceful but I can see those hints of his thirst for great power. I wonder what will happen with that.

Spin the Dawn is perfect for fans of Renee Ahdieh, Naomi Novik, and Heather Fawcett. Specifically fans of Uprooted and Even The Darkest Stars. I really loved this book and I cannot wait to read more. Even if this book doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, I encourage you to try it out. I am sure that you will find it worthwhile. I certainly did.
