Synopsis:

Project Runway meets Mulan in this sweeping YA fantasy about a young girl who poses as a boy to compete for the role of imperial tailor and embarks on an impossible journey to sew three magic dresses, from the sun, the moon, and the stars.

Maia Tamarin dreams of becoming the greatest tailor in the land, but as a girl, the best she can hope for is to marry well. When a royal messenger summons her ailing father, once a tailor of renown, to court, Maia poses as a boy and takes his place. She knows her life is forfeit if her secret is discovered, but she’ll take that risk to achieve her dream and save her family from ruin. There’s just one catch: Maia is one of twelve tailors vying for the job.

Backstabbing and lies run rampant as the tailors compete in challenges to prove their artistry and skill. Maia’s task is further complicated when she draws the attention of the court magician, Edan, whose piercing eyes seem to see straight through her disguise.

And nothing could have prepared her for the final challenge: to sew three magic gowns for the emperor’s reluctant bride-to-be, from the laughter of the sun, the tears of the moon, and the blood of stars. With this impossible task before her, she embarks on a journey to the far reaches of the kingdom, seeking the sun, the moon, and the stars, and finding more than she ever could have imagined.

Steeped in Chinese culture, sizzling with forbidden romance, and shimmering with magic, this young adult fantasy is pitch-perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas or Renée Ahdieh.

📝My Review📝

I received an arc of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

I loved this book. It was fresh, original, unique, and nostalgic of other tales. Spin the Dawn is the amazing story of Maia Tamarin and how she fights to become the Imperial Tailor and the amazing journey she goes on to create the dresses of legend. The plot was constantly intriguing, I never wanted to put the book down. This book is a Mulan inspired retelling but other than the fact that Maia has to disguise herself as a boy the similarities stop there. Spin the Dawn was its own original tale but like I mentioned some aspects of it reminded me of other stories. The plot was consistently moving, it was a nonstop battle to the finish. My only critique is that I think the romance leaned towards insta-love and that is not my favorite trope at all.

I really loved the characters. Maia is a wonderful female protagonist. She consistently worked hard no matter how many people undermined or teased her. Her talent as a seamstress knows no bounds. I think she got in her head a lot of the time but she was always strong enough to pull off the tasks required of her without Edan’s help. Now let’s talk about Edan! His character archetype is what I like to call the “Nikolai Archetype,” meaning that his character personality and actions are similar to that of Nikolai from the Grisha trilogy. These characteristics include sarcastic, snarky, never takes anything seriously, fun, sly, secretive, very attractive, has some type of eliteness to them, mischievous, evasive of questions, usually lonely, and lastly has a 99.9% chance of being my favorite character in the book. Another character like this who Edan reminds me of in River Shara from Even The Darkest Stars. He was a wonderful character and as the Lord Enchanter there was no shortage of antics from him. He loved to tease Maia but also supported her along the way. Lady Sarnai is the character I am most interested in. I think she has a big role to play and I want to learn more about it. She acts cold and vicious but it is obvious to see that she is just a girl upset over being given to the emperor as a way to barter peace. More is going to come out of that storyline and I cannot wait to learn more about it. Emperor Khanujin is interesting and I can’t really figure him out. He seems calm and peaceful but I can see those hints of his thirst for great power. I wonder what will happen with that.

Spin the Dawn is perfect for fans of Renee Ahdieh, Naomi Novik, and Heather Fawcett. Specifically fans of Uprooted and Even The Darkest Stars. I really loved this book and I cannot wait to read more. Even if this book doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, I encourage you to try it out. I am sure that you will find it worthwhile. I certainly did.

📝My Review📝:

What a satisfying conclusion.

I absolutely adore this story and the world that S. Jae-Jones has built in these two books. I feel as though these two books are some that I will always come back to. They are timeless and magical. That being said, I enjoyed Wintersong much more than I did Shadowsong for a variety of reasons.

Firstly, this book was very confusing at times. There were moments when I would shout, “THIS MAKES NO ******* SENSE.” And sadly I am still confused about some things. Second, there were a lot of unanswered questions. We still really don’t know why or how the Goblin King became the Goblin King. His past is still very much a mystery. We also still don’t know how he came to find Liesl in the first place. Also a lot of stuff about Liesl’s family history was hinted at but never explained. Thirdly, I was able to guess the ending and most of the twists at least halfway through the book. The air of mystery and surprise was lacking. Finally, there was a severe lack of the Goblin King in this book. He was barely in it, he appeared at most maybe ten times. Due to his absence there was also a lack of romance in the book. The reason I could not give this book 5 stars is because I felt like there was something missing from it, and that something was the Goblin King. He was such an amazing character in the first book and it is really sad that he took a backseat in this one.

All in all I did really enjoy this book and it is one that I will be thinking about for a long time. Especially because I FINALLY know what the Goblin King’s name is.

📝My Review📝:

LOVED LOVED LOVED!!!

God this book was so amazing and better than the first one! All the flaws I found with the first book were corrected in this sequel and I love seeing the growth Heather Fawcett had as an author. The writing was great, the characters were all flushed out, and I have no unanswered questions. River and Kamzin are two of my favorite literary characters and I am so sad to see their journey come to an end…but I do believe that there is room for more if Heather Fawcett should wish it (please). The story in this sequel was so interesting as well, the prospect of hunting down a fallen star in a race against the witches was so thrilling. I really could not put this book down, I flew through it. Devoured it actually.

Kamzin was so determined in this book. After all that happened in the previous one she was not going to lose again no matter who was standing in her way. Her anger and perseverance where strong tools that she used in this novel to keep her going. River was as always wonderful. Not as much of his sarcasm and humor were present in this one (understandably) but he was still River. Despite everything that happened in the last book I could not hate hime and I don’t think I ever will because I understand why he did what he did even if it was a stupid decision. Tem and Lusha were so flushed out in this book, I really came to like them both. Lusha is so headstrong and reminds me a lot of myself. Tem is such a good friend and everything he went through in this novel solidifies that. I have come to love these characters a lot and I really do hope to see more of them in the future someday.

Not many people talk about this duology and that saddens me a lot. It is one of the best stories in YA literature that I have read and it is so unique. I recommend this duology to everyone because it is a fun tale of action, romance, adventure, and fantasy. I have never had much interest in leaving my house but these books made me want to leave and explore the world.

Synopsis:

One thousand years ago, the great Kami Dragon was summoned to grant a single terrible wish—and the land of Iwagoto was plunged into an age of darkness and chaos.

Now, for whoever holds the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers, a new wish will be granted. A new age is about to dawn.

Raised by monks in the isolated Silent Winds temple, Yumeko has trained all her life to hide her yokai nature. Half kitsune, half human, her skill with illusion is matched only by her penchant for mischief. Until the day her home is burned to the ground, her adoptive family is brutally slain and she is forced to flee for her life with the temple’s greatest treasure—one part of the ancient scroll.

There are many who would claim the dragon’s wish for their own. Kage Tatsumi, a mysterious samurai of the Shadow Clan, is one such hunter, under orders to retrieve the scroll…at any cost. Fate brings Kage and Yumeko together. With a promise to lead him to the scroll, an uneasy alliance is formed, offering Yumeko her best hope for survival. But he seeks what she has hidden away, and her deception could ultimately tear them both apart.

With an army of demons at her heels and the unlikeliest of allies at her side, Yumeko’s secrets are more than a matter of life or death. They are the key to the fate of the world itself.

📝My Review📝:

This book was so cool! Very interesting plot and something we haven’t really seen in YA books before.

Shadow of the Fox was such a fun ride. This book really was like an anime and I loved that. Yumeko was such an interesting character, being half yokai she had two sides to herself: the yokai and the human. I loved that she was half kitsune of all yokai. Being an avid watcher of anime many of the terms and myths in this book were familiar to me, but I think someone who has no knowledge of Japanese mythology will have a really hard time getting through this unless they have the patience for it. The plot is also very slow. The journey they take as well as the romance is very slow burn. If you are not a fan of slower paced books than this probably is not the book for you. I loved how more characters were brought to the forefront of the story as the book went on (just like an anime). Yumeko, Tatsumi, Okame, Daisuke, and Reika are great characters and I cannot wait to see more of them. This book reminded me of Even The Darkest Stars by Heather Fawcett. The whole adventure/traveling and magic aspects of the books were very familiar. Even The Darkest Stars was one of my favorite reads of this year so I am happy to read another book like it.

Yumeko is very innocent for someone who’s nature it is supposed to be quite mischievous. We saw most of her mischievous side at the beginning of the book but once Tatsumi came along her kitsune nature practically disappeared. She just appeared to be a naive human and was fairly tame and righteous the entire book. It was Tatsumi who really struggled with the dueling nature thing. Being the carrier of the demon sword he was always battling the demon for control and was pretty much forced to be emotionless which I didn’t mind. I rather liked him and it was fun to see Yumeko slowly chip away at his walls.

Okame is the typical comic relief character but he was a light to the darkness that was Tatsumi. I love how he kind of took on this big brother role to Yumeko and was always looking out for her. I also really like that he wasn’t just a useless character, he was actually a decent fighter/archer and came in handy a lot. Daisuke was an interesting character. Ever since he appeared in the first chapter I wondered when he would pop up again in the book. He is very kind and honorable, not to mention an incredibly skilled swordsmen. We did not get too much of him in this book so I am excited to see what he will be like in the next one. Reika is literally Rei from Sailor Moon nobody can fight me on this. She is bad ass, strong willed, and takes nothing from anyone. She is the coolest shrine maiden you will ever meet. I love that a female was added to the group.

This book was not a romance, it was about a girl carrying out the last will of her master and journeying across the empire to try and save the world. Yes there are romantic elements but it is very very VERY slow burn so if you were looking for something faster you won’t find it here. I am personally a fan of slow burn romances so I really had no issues.

The reason this book is not a 5 star rating is because while I really enjoyed this book it did not feel like a 5 star to me. The story moved very slowly. While there was plenty of action throughout the book there would be some parts where it felt like the book was dragging. Also I wished Yumeko’s kitsune nature came out more than it did. Nonetheless I cannot wait for the next book in the trilogy. How I am supposed to wait six months, I do not know.

📝My Review📝:

I was so happy with this book I could cry. I loved reading this story and it never bored me. This is the first time in a while that I have read a book that did not leave me displeased. The writing was beautiful, the characters were great, and the story though it be familiar (Labyrinth) it was incredibly unique all in its own. The only thing I would change about this book is the time that I read it, I think this book would be a perfect winter read.

This book has such a focus on music that you don’t really see in many other books. Liesl’s dream is to compose, and with the Goblin King’s help they get to make beautiful music together.

Liesl was a great protagonist. She was a little annoying at times because she would always put others before herself and her needs. Once she discovered herself she got much better.

The Goblin King was my absolute favorite. He was mysterious, sexy, and just an all round great character. I love all the mystery surrounding his character but I’m dying to find out more.

This story leaves you wanting more and more. The writing is beautifully haunting and will leave you thinking. This is one of my favorite books of all time.
