All bets are off. This time the gamble is survival.
Emika Chen barely made it out of the Warcross Championships alive. Now that she knows the truth behind Hideo’s new NeuroLink algorithm, she can no longer trust the one person she’s always looked up to, who she once thought was on her side.
Determined to put a stop to Hideo’s grim plans, Emika and the Phoenix Riders band together, only to find a new threat lurking on the neon-lit streets of Tokyo. Someone’s put a bounty on Emika’s head, and her sole chance for survival lies with Zero and the Blackcoats, his ruthless crew. But Emika soon learns that Zero isn’t all that he seems—and his protection comes at a price.
Caught in a web of betrayal, with the future of free will at risk, just how far will Emika go to take down the man she loves?
Did I finish this entire book in less than a day? Yes…yes I did.
Where do I even begin? Amazing. I cried, laughed, and cried some more over this book and I am so happy with it. The plot was great and not at all what I was expecting. I am so happy with everything that happened even though it was a classic bittersweet Marie Lu ending. I waited an entire year for this book and I was not disappointed at all. The stakes were so high in this book I could not put it down.
Emika and Hideo are some of my favorite protagonists. It was good to see her struggle with her feelings for Hideo because it made everything more realistic. She still cared about him and she fought to get to the boy she loved inside. Hideo totally redeemed himself in this book. I always understood his reasons behind why he did what he did but it’s a fine line and a tricky subject to debate.
I still wish there was more of Asher, Hammie, and Roshan. They were there but noticeably absent. Speaking of, Ren wasn’t in this book at all. I was really curious to see what would happen with him but I guess his story arc ended after he got arrested in Warcross. I would have loved to know how he joined up with Zero in the first place. Tremaine played a pretty significant role in this book and it was nice to see his character grow from Warcross.
Zero/ Sasuke was such an interesting character! I didn’t see any of the twists that happened with him. He deserved so much better. Jax was also an interesting new character. If it wasn’t for her everything probably would have gone even worse than it did. Her character always seemed so lonely, probably due to her upbringing. She was a total badass though no doubt about it.
Wildcard can be described in one word: wild. Everything was so crazy in this book but that is what made it so enjoyable. I never knew what turn the plot was going to take. I loved everything about this book. Marie Lu will always be one of my favorite authors and reading this book really solidified that.
