Love On The Ranch Synopsis:
Elizabeth McKinnie will no longer accept men ruling her life. After the Civil War devastated her family home, and having no way to survive, Elizabeth accepts one of the mail-order bride proposals presented to her and her sisters. She chooses a man who promises to treat her as an equal. Her sister convinces her to switch suitors, proclaiming the weather in Texas would be more suitable for Elizabeth’s weak lungs. Agreeing, she heads west to meet the mysterious cattle baron she knows little about.
Jeb Clayton grew up as a poor son of a drunkard. He has worked his entire life to ensure he never starves again. He is a man who understands cows better than women, especially after watching the fairer sex manipulate his father into an early grave. Still, he begrudgingly agrees to marry a sturdy bride to produce sons who can help build his ranch into an empire. Yet, what he sees getting off the stagecoach is a whisper-of-a-woman with undesirable birthing hips.
When Elizabeth’s and Jeb’s futures are threatened will they join forces, or will their bitterness be their end?
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
There was a time in my life where I preferred reading historical romances over any other genre. That was around twenty years ago and my preferences have definitely changed. I love to read most genres now a days. But the truth is, there aren’t too many historical romances that have interested me lately. But that changed after I read the blurb for Love On The Ranch. I’ve always like the mail order brides trope but lets face it, they are overdone and it’s rare to find an original. That said, I wanted to read this book and I’m happy that I did. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Ciara Knight is a new author to me. I really enjoyed her talent for storytelling. While this novel is clean as far as intimacy goes, I felt the attraction and tension between Elizabeth and Jeb. She had a sassy, straight-forward attitude. She did not take threats from anyone. That includes the broody, rude and down right mean, Jeb Clayton. That being said, it does take nearly the whole book before these two declare their true feelings for each other. However, the slow build of their relationship did not frustrate me with the slower pace. Why? Because there was so much going on other than Elizabeth and Jeb’s relationship. This book has some angst and even a bit of suspense. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I will definitely be back reading the McKinnie Mail Order Brides series.
This is my honest and unbiased review. Thank you for taking the time to read it. 🙂
