Courtney Bishop is as sugary sweet as her famous blueberry muffins.
Southern belle at heart, Cali girl by choice.
She barged into my life and easily became my best friend.
All was great as roommates and just friends, but then I fell for the girl who could chop firewood, deliver baby calves, and bail hay without breaking a sweat.
She’s the perfect mixture of sugar and spice, and I love her.

Being more than friends and trying to build our future isn’t as easy as it sounds.
Moving forward and creating memories is all I want for us, but when the past continues to come back and haunt me, I’m not so sure she’ll stay for the ride.

Loving her is easy, but losing her will break me. Burning passion combined with an undeniable chemistry constantly pushes and pulls us together. In the end, I’ll prove we’re worth the fight, even when the game is far from over.

Checkmate, sweetheart.

**This is book 2 in the Checkmate Duet Series–a friends to lovers romance. You must read book 1, Checkmate: This is Reckless first. Highly recommended to read the Checkmate Duet, This is War and This is Love first, but not necessary. This can read as a standalone duet.**

Drew and Courtney…….

Before I continue with this review, you need to be aware that This Is Effortless is book two and picks up where book one, This Is Reckless left off. That said, there was one heck of a cliffhanger so you need to read book one first.

So doing my best to not give away any spoilers, I can tell you that although the angst and suspense is present by the same person, there are many new twists and turns to keep you wondering what is going to happen and when.

For me the climax was not a complete surprise; I had my suspicions pretty early on. What I was a little disappointed with was the resolution. I was definitely happy about what happened but I felt it was rushed and left me slightly dissatisfied. I would have like to see more of a confrontation.

As characters, Drew and Courtney were absolutely adorable together. They were an amazing couple. Never mind that their chemistry was smoking hot, it was the way they treated each other with reverence and love that tugged at my heart. And don’t even get me going on about how perfect Drew is as a hero. Oh. My. God! The mold was definitely broken after Drew was created. Seriously, if you read book one then you already know his looks and physique were drool worthy. But also, Drew is loyal, loving, attentive, protective, romantic and absolutely easy to fall in love with.

I believe Courtney was a perfect fit for Drew in every way. However, in this book, as opposed to book one, some of her character elements changed. She was no longer known to me as mouthy, sassy, bold, and courageous. Yes she still had some of those qualities but sadly I felt they were overshadowed by her fears. Courtney acted more like the victim and less like the smart*ss, a**-kicking Courtney we met in book one. This is only my opinion and you may think differently.

The middle portion of the book got a bit boring as we waited for the suspense element to return. But once the story took on a steadier pace, I was fully engaged once again.

Courtney and Drew’s books were the first I read by Kennedy Fox. I admit I am really looking forward to the next duet, eager to learn Logan’s story. And I certainly will be adding Travis and Viola’s duet to my TBR.
